Freerice, Play, Learn, and end hunger

Description of App:

Freerice is the fun and educational trivia game that lets you make a difference and get smarter — just by playing.

As you play Freerice and answer questions correctly, messages from our sponsors appear on your screen. When you see one of these messages, you trigger a payment from the sponsor to the World Food Programme to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.

In the game, these payments are represented by grains of rice. The amount of money generated when you view a sponsored message is roughly equivalent to what the World Food Programme spends to purchase 10 grains of rice.

By playing, you are generating the money that pays for this rice. The money is also used to pay for other types of assistance — not only rice — depending on where needs are greatest.

Freerice asks you for consent to show you more personalized ads (just like on the website). These ads generate higher payments from our sponsors. You can refuse these permissions (go to the about page to access them) or change your advertising ID in your phone settings at any time.

Accessibility Comments:

After downloading the app, a screen comes up describing the app and how to play. For example it explains how your category, difficulty level can be selected once you get started. From here the options are to tap next or create an account. If you click the create account button the screen shows you where you can select your language: Deutsch,Espanol, Francais, Italiano, Nederlands, Portuguese. you can change this by tapping the pop up button, tapping where voice over says picker item adjustable at the bottom of the screen. Here swipe up and down with your finger to scroll between the languages that you want to play in, then tap your language. You probably won't have to do this unless you specifically want to change the language, it should be set to your location as default.
On this screen you need to also tap the link where voiceover says yes I agree.
This just certifies your age.
Tapping the yes I agree link wil take you to another screen. Here you need to move your finger
around again until voiceover says close window link.
You should now be at the create account page.
Just double tap on the user name text field, email textfield, password secure textfield, password confirm secure textfield and in each one of these enter your details.
At the bottom is confirm your age to double tap and then double tap the create account button.
You should then be good to go.
You should then be in your profile if you want to save how many grains you have.
Otherwise if you don’t want to create an acount and just want to play the English vocabulary game then after downloading the app, and opening it, you can just click next instead of create account.
If you click the next button it should go straight to the English vocabulary game.
This shows five horizontal bars.
The top is the question
e.g.: selection means
under this top row is 4 answers you can choose from
e.g. cup
bases
choice
enterprise.
Just double tap your choice and the screen changes to the next question.
After each question your rice grain total changes by ten depending on whether you’ve got it right or wrong.
When you’re choosing your answer, swiping to the right or left just stays on the same row.
But if you move rather than swipe your finger down or up the screen the next choice should be read out to you.
At the bottom of the screen voiceover should say English vocabulary as your category. If you swipe to the right it says your total rice grains.
You may have more success with higher versions of Ios and be able to change your category or difficulty which I haven’t been able to do.

VoiceOver Performance:

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling:

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability:

Some parts of the app are accessible with VoiceOver, but not enough to make it usable.

Other Comments:

As I explained above the only category accessable with Voiceover is the English vocabulary. There is no way of changing this category or difficulty level when I was using my iPhone 5s. The You can access the app or play the games from the website https://beta.freerice.com/
website is brilliant though.
