Posted on Friday, March 30, 2018 by AppleVis

Apple has today released macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, bringing new features and bug fixes.

Our testing of macOS 10.13.4 suggests that there is at least one fix for VoiceOver users in this release:

  • VoiceOver once again speaks characters as you type in the Safari address bar.

We are currently unaware of any other accessibility-related changes, regressions or improvements in macOS 10.13.4. However, as we always stress, it is impossible for us to test all…

Trimming Mac Tech, a Snappier VoiceOver

Posted on Monday, February 5, 2018 by Nicholas

"VoiceOver is On." Accessing Life with Adaptive Technology.

A Picky Old-School Techie.

Many options available on Mac and iOS can be processor intensive causing not only battery drain, but slowing down VoiceOver's response time over all. Choosing the ones that are best suited for my needs and turning off the ones that are not, can help. It can save battery life and give my device less to do, allowing it to pay quicker attention to me. :-)

Okay I admit it, I am a…

Posted on Thursday, January 4, 2018 by Nicholas

Previously.

In my previous post, "Mac Scripting, Hello World", we looked at 'tell blocks' where indented commands could be sent to specific applications. The commands were indented one tab spot, while the blocks were finished off with an 'end tell' command. There are several types of blocks, tell blocks, if blocks and repeat blocks to name a few…

Speaking Up with AppleScript

Once You gaze into the System, the System also gazes into You! :-)

Fair warning! Any programming and scripting adventures can at first, be; very frustrating, extremely rewarding, can sink you into the depths of a learning curve for a long period of time, expand one's thinking patterns far beyond normal, cause one to pull one's hair out, cause one to become much faster and productive on their computer, can at times force one to restart their…

Five Apple Innovations that Impacted Accessibility

Posted on Friday, October 20, 2017 by PaulMartz

If you’re like me, there’s no way you can resist reading an article with a title like 5 TECH STANDARDS APPLE MURDERED AND 5 MORE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK.

I found the five murder victims quite noteworthy. Some seem obvious, like the demise of the floppy disk and CD-ROM. Back in the ā€˜90s, PC manufacturers were a lot like lemmings that would’ve followed each other over the floppy disk cliff were it not for Apple’s bold leadership…

Yo, Human! Trick or Tweak, Sounds Like Halloween: Accessing Life with adaptive Technology

Posted on Sunday, October 8, 2017 by Nicholas

Customizing the Mac for Halloween used to be a lot easier. One could install a system-wide 'Theme' that included desktop and icon graphics, a custom screen-saver and even sets of interface sounds. Having the Trash growl at you when emptied, animated ghastly faces for desktop icons, spooky creaks and moans emanating from one's computer were all a common thing around Halloween.

Since Apple gave us a sandbox to occupy while we play with our apps, these custom system-wide themes can no…

The New, Good, and Bad for VoiceOver users in macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Posted on Monday, September 25, 2017 by mehgcap

Hello, High Sierra

Today, Apple released the macOS 10.13 ā€œHigh Sierraā€ update. As usual, I won’t cover the mainstream features for the most part, concentrating instead on accessibility.

Please remember to check the section about bugs to see if it’s worth upgrading. There’s no harm in holding off a few weeks or months to let Apple address a problem you may find too disruptive to deal with. In particular, users of the ā€œmostā€ punctuation setting should know that this setting…

Ripping Vinyl to iTunes Using Audacity

Posted on Monday, September 25, 2017 by PaulMartz

My collection of about 200 late-ā€˜70s and early-ā€˜80s punk, rock, and pop albums is near and dear to my heart, but I couldn’t justify their shelf space when I know they could all fit on my phone. The only thing holding me back from ripping my collection was the overwhelming nature of recording, labeling, and cleaning up well over 100 hours of audio. While I procrastinated, I looked at turntables, read articles, and talked to musician friends about digital recording. Many of them recommended…

Intro

Apple held its annual fall media event today, announcing new iPhones, Apple Watches, and Apple TV. As usual, we’re here to recap what was shown off, so you know just how close to all your money Apple will be getting this year.

Before that, though, there’s some nostalgia to this event you may find interesting. This year mark’s the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, as well as the first year the company’s newly constructed campus, Apple Park, was ready to be used. It was…

Announcing Tdsr: A Command Line Screen Reader For Macintosh And GNU/Linux

Posted on Friday, September 8, 2017 by Chris Hofstader

Earlier this year, the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired of San Francisco (known as San Francisco Lighthouse to people who speak standard English) agreed that the support for the Macintosh Terminal app using VoiceOver was an inadequate solution for all but the most minimal of its possible use cases. To remedy this issue, they funded the development of a new little screen reader called tdsr.

Yo, Human! A SIRI-Us Relationship: Accessing Life with Adaptive Technology

Posted on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 by Nicholas

There is something about SIRI, I don't know what it is, but we seem to share a relationship now. Actually we share many relationships. SIRI even knows about all my other relationships. In fact, she helped me in their creation.

Me, right after startup: SIRI?

SIRI, a bit sluggish at first: Yes Nicholas?

Me: What time is it?

SIRI: It's 5:30 AM. You woke me up.

Me: Well get up, it's time to get busy.

SIRI: What?

Me: Open 'your' settings…

Yo, Human! Tweaking My Mac: Accessing Life with Adaptive Technology

Posted on Monday, August 21, 2017 by Nicholas

I love customizing and tweaking my Mac operating System. From finding those little speed boosts to reducing keypresses for navigation, there is something exciting about finding settings that actually help and make things easier and more comfy. If it were a car it would be a low-rider and have pin-stripes. A stereo would be blasting Led Zeppelin or Santana with a thumpin' subwoofer in the trunk. Some fuzzy dice would be hanging from the mirror. Oops, showing my age again.

Since my Mac…
