Description of App
DayNight is designed to help the blind and visually impaired with day and night awareness by scheduling notifications at sunrise and sunset.
Simply navigate through the setup steps so DayNight knows your location and has access to send you notifications. Once complete 1 month of notifications will be scheduled and can be disabled anytime within the app.
Feel free to reach out for improvements via Twitter @ay8s.

that's useful!
we have an escort service provided by the campus, and it only starts running after sunset! I could never tell when that was, now I can... useful!
I like it!
I will be downloading this. I like to open and/or close my blinds accordingly when I'm at home. Knowing when the sun sets and being notified is helpful. Yes, Weather Gods tells me when sunset time is, but then it's like... oh yeah, 5:30 was sunset. Now it's 6:00 and my blinds are still open. The notification would also remind me to close them. Just one use for this. I'm sure there are plenty of others.
Feedback welcome
Thanks for sharing DayNight. Great to hear already that it will be useful.
I have an update ready to submit to Apple with a few improvements which include differing notification sounds for sunrise and sunset to help differentiate them from the usual iOS sounds. If anyone has any feedback or ideas let me know, I'd be happy to keep adding to DayNight.
oopsy
hey, it didn't give me a night notification today. does it only start working the next day?
Odd
That's odd. So it should schedule for the current day but it's certainly possible theres a bug causing them to start a day late. Will see if I can spot anything and fix it up if I do. Sorry about that techluver!
Yup
Yup, I'm totally getting this.
A recommendation, could you add what type of moon it is and zodiac signs? That would be cool.
i'm sorry. i was wrong.
Somehow, it showed in my notification center, but didn't make a sound or pop up at the time on the lock screen. ideas?
could your phone have been on dnd?
could your phone have been on dnd somehow, or maybe the mute switch was on? I wouldn't really have a need for such an app because I have light and a tiny bit of color perception, (it's gotten less as I've gotten older), but i'm glad such an app exists for those who really need it.
no
I don't use DND. thanks for the thought, though
Figured it out
Looks like I didn't add sounds to the permissions request. The update I have with Apple waiting for review will fix this one up.
In the meantime you might be able to head to Settings.app > DayNight to enable Sounds. Next update will include differing sounds for sunrise and sunset. :)
a suggestion
because the app requires you to open it each month to keep the notifications coming, could there be something that notifies you when your month is almost up so you remember to open the app to schedule the next block of time?
In the meantime, I've set up a monthly reminder to open the app myself, but it's just a thought moving forward so nobody is caught by surprise when they forget the date the app told them they'd have to re-up their notifications.
Totally
The plan is to add a notification or two on the last day to remind you to open the app to schedule more. I'll also differentiate the notification sound to make it more obvious action is needed. :)
Hope to have this one out in v1.2 in a few days.
update
I installed the update, and it said it was going to add sounders. Unfortunately, this did not happen for me. I went into settings, (both for Daynight itself and in the notification center), and I do not see how to enable sounds. It just allows me to have banner or alert notifications. I even re-opened the app, thinking that might trigger it and no dice. Any ideas?
Ooops
Sorry about that! So I think to get the permissions in order you might need to remove the app and re-install for it to request the sound permission.
So sorry for making you go through that to get things in order. Will look at adjusting the next version to detect when that is the case.
Thanks
Re-install
Hi Mendi,
If you re-install the app the option for sounds appears in the settings >> Notifications >> DayNight
thanks
Good enough. I will reinstall then.
Man o Man what a great app
I have to say I love this app. I always had issues remembering when to turn on my lights or open the blinds now I don't. Thanks app developers.
Thank you!
Thank you Andrew! I like this app too! So appreciated.
Fantastic work
It's been invaluable and rather up lifting noticing that the days are getting longer.
It's just a suggestion and I know that there are apps that already do this, but with the whole light and dark thing, perhaps an integration of a light sensor? I'm just thinking, in my apartment there is a mess of switches with some bizarre combinations to turn lights on and off. It's just a suggestion as I said but think it could connect nicely with the whole light dark awareness.
Also, just an idea, any chance of getting samples that are cock crow for sun rise and owl tweet for sun set? That would be sweet.
Again, thank you so much for making this happen. As you can see, your work means a great deal to us.
Uh... Whoops
I could probably have phrased that last a little better...
Love that idea. Will have a
Love that idea. Will have a think about how I can add that in soon. Seems Apple don't like developers using the ambient light sensor so they tend to reject apps who use it however I can use the camera to pull of something similar.
Hoping I can also get a version working which doesn't require opening the app to schedule more notifications.
Happy to help. If anyone has any other app ideas that would help I'd be happy to read over and consider building them out. :)
Have an update incoming
I have an update ready to go but would love to test it out if anyones willing. The update makes use of background location tracking but only for significant location changes to ensure battery life isn't effected too much.
When iOS passes us a new location in the background we re-schedule the notifications which means if you trigger location changes often you'll no longer need to re-open the app to schedule more notifications in theory.
Happy to invite a few people to test it out if you want to fire an email over to contact [at] andydev.co.uk.
