Please Read: Updated Guidelines for Posting to the AppleVis Forum

The aim of the AppleVis forum is to allow members of our community to share information and expertise and to gain help and support from others. To ensure that the forum is a rewarding and supportive experience, we have which we encourage all users of the forum to follow. These guidelines have recently been updated, so we thought that we should take the opportunity to remind you all of what they are. We try to avoid overt moderation, but if people stray outside the reasonable requests listed below, then their postings will be removed by our Editorial Team. Those who persistently offend will be banned from using the forums. 

  1. Before starting a new topic, we would recommend that you use the site’s search facility to check if a similar topic already exists or if the question that you are about to ask has previously been asked and answered.
  2. Please use clear and descriptive subject lines for your posts. Doing so will significantly increase the likelihood that others will read your post and answer any questions that you may have asked.
  3. Please only post questions about a single topic in any new post to the forum. For example, do not ask a question about using an iOS app and another question about Bluetooth keyboards in the same post. This will improve your chances of getting appropriate and helpful answers and also make discussion easier to follow.
  4. Please do not post replies which add no value to the existing discussion. For example, if somebody has asked for information on a specific app, replying to say that you have not used that app is of no value and only serves to get in the way of what might be helpful answers. Additionally, if someone asks a question about how to do a particular task, replying to the post and saying to do an internet search to find the answer is not at all helpful.
  5. Please stay on topic. Always stick to the original topic that was stated by the person who started the thread. If you have a suggestion or comment that is on a different topic, please start a new thread.
  6. Please be polite. The AppleVis forum is designed to build a positive, thriving community. Please give the same consideration and tolerance to others that you would like to receive from them. It is perfectly okay to have a differing viewpoint from someone else; please remember, though, to express your views in a respectful manner.  Posts that are deliberately insulting to other members of the AppleVis community will be edited and/or removed.
  7. No advertising. The AppleVis Forums are not to be used for trading/swapping or selling/advertising products or services. If you wish to post information about a product or service that you believe would be of interest to our community and falls within the scope of the website, please beforehand for our approval.
  8. Please do not use the AppleVis Forum to promote your own website or online resource. If you want to let others know of a website that might be of interest and which falls within the scope of AppleVis, you should submit it to our Link Directory.
  9. No flaming. Flaming is the act of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting. These types of posts are absolutely not allowed and will result in the immediate removal of the offending post.
  10. Please do not post inappropriate or offensive content. This includes: posting messages with insults or profanity; or messages which are religiously, racially, or sexually offensive. These types of posts will result in the post being edited or removed and could also lead to your forum privileges being revoked.
  11. Please do not post illegal content. For example, no posts about the illegal use of licensed software or posting information about beta versions of software which would breach any non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
  12. Please do not spam. Repeated posting of a message (or very similar messages) multiple times is considered spamming and is not welcome here. When making a post, please post it only one time in the most appropriate forum category that fits the topic of your post. Multiple posts will be unpublished or deleted, and continued abuse of this guideline may result in having your posting privileges revoked.
  13. To keep your identity and personal information safe and to keep from being added to a spammer&;s e-mail list, it is recommended that you not include e-mail addresses or other personal information in your posts.

Spelling and Punctuation

Can we please add a guideline concerning correct spelling and punctuation? I understand if English is a second language, but it drives me up the wall when I see posts that are one long run on sentence. I also cannot understand people who cannot capatalize the word I.

Unfortunately, making proper spelling and grammar usage a guideline would be, at best, impractical--and at worst, insensitive to peoples' specific situations.

I agree. We all make

I agree. We all make mistakes, me included.

Tehre are those of us who are disabled and who for some reason or another can't spell due to a disability so I would not even go there as you will cause more trouble then it's really worth.

Hello. Just wanted to put in my two cents. While I do agree that run on sentences drive me crazy, I understand we need to be sensitive. Half the time I barely read before i send, awful habbit, I admit. also i don't know why but the word I sometimes doesn't seem to capitalize when I know i've held down the shift key. I'll try to make a concerted effort to look for glaring typos, but my main ones are reversing letters because of typing quickly. If you can figure out ti means it, then I'm ok with a little error like that. Sorry to be so long.

One App or platform per post?

Hi All,
I am certainly not suggesting that this be subject to moderation, but I would like to suggest that when creating a post, perhaps restrict yourself to one App/Platform/problem per post.
Too often I read a post from someone who is seeking help about several, non connected issues, (maybe even across devices) in the one entry.
If You have some questions about, for example, Facebook on the Mac, Siri on an iPhone and a potential bug in your iPod Shuffle please don't lump them all into the one rambling post. Go on, take the extra minute and create 3 distinct posts. It will be worth it, I promise.
A confusion of questions about multiple problems, across various platforms surely won't garner the same considered responses as would three succinct individual posts. Especially if they are placed in the correct folders and properly tagged.
And that, Ladies and Gents, is my two Cents for today...

Hello.
AS of spelling, I agree, this is one thing which you hardly can regulate, I think it is the self respect and honour of everyone to make shure they write correctly. Of course there are exceptions where people do make mistakes, wether they want it or not.

Second point, I would suggest to add to the guidelines a point which tries to avoid multiple posts. Every now and then I see on the forum a question which was discussed and solved few days ago. That makes me look at the search field and wonder if I am the only one who ever uses it?

May I suggest that the Apple this team repost the guidelines periodically. Say every three or four months to help a skirt users remember them and also to make new users which we hope to join every day aware of the guidelines.

No One-Liners

Hi everyone. I wasn't going to post this suggestion, but I've given it some thoughts and I think I should get it out there. Certain unnamed members have always posted just one sentence for their remarks, and I honestly think this is a bit off-putting particularly for newcomers to Apple products like myself. I'm not trying to say that I've gotten bad advice from this or any other online communities. I have, as a matter of fact, been very impressed with every bit of advice which I've received and I thank everybody for it. But posting comments with little to no explanation is something I think needs to be done away with if at all possible. I think this goes back to the discussion of not posting at all if you don't know the answer to something. I hope this makes sense to everyone. I'm in no way trying to pick on anybody.

Thank you Jake, i agree with you. See i couldn've just sent the post. We're all guilty of one liners, i moreso for deplorable spelling which I don't read before i send, I'm trying to change, I promise. Long time members, here we have a great thought from a fresh Mac user who culd get frustrated or confused from a one line post. Sorry not to put words in your mouth, Jake. All of the above to ask, that everyone, please try your hardest not to do it.

Great Article on Spelling

Hi all. I'm revisiting this thread because a neighbor directed me to a great article which he read a couple days ago. I'm pasting a link to this article below, not to offend anybody, but rather to further illustrate the point that good spelling is important. At least to me it is. In addition, this article mentions Siri so I feel it is definitely on topic. I think the article makes some very good points. One in particular with which I agree is about misinterpreting a word or phrase as something else. I realize nobody is perfect, and this is true of the originator of this message lol! Spelling

As some users were saying, some people have a hard time spelling. So I still think that the spelling rule should not apply. So lets just get that out of the way. LOL

at least, try your very best

While it's impractical to make proper spelling an actual guideline, I'd like to encourage everyone to at least, try to get it right if humanly possible. Nobody is perfect but i'm seeing so many people dictate their responses using an iPhone, and it always really irritates me when I encounter a run-on sentence. All the information they're trying to convey gets lost. The sad thing is it's probably good. All people have to do is just make a bit of effort in this regard. Spellchecking is a great thing to do. I always do this before posting. I might not get every single word spelled correctly, but I at least give it the old college try.

I agree 100 percent about that. And why people don't correct their dictation tells me that they are lazy. I never use dictation because for 1 I have fingers to touch the screen. I could understand for the people that don't but spelling errors are not an excuse.

Item 13, thank you for that one too!

I was just re-reading the guidelines and noticed item 13 about posting personal information. I see this happening a lot especially when it comes to beta testing different apps. It's fantastic that people want to be beta testers and improve the accessibility of apps, but including your email address in a post is just asking to be added to a spammers address list. Everyone on here has a profile, so perhaps a better way to handle that particular situation is for an app developer to include some kind of contact details in their profile so any requests for promo codes and other offers of help can be done privately. This also makes it easier for app developers to corolate information so they won't have to write down everyone's email addresses. Just a thought, of course!

Read before posting?

I'd like a rule that tells users to read before posting. Often times one person will answer the question, and 2 or 3 people will reply with the same exact answer. Sometimes even after a user has thanked the first poster. Now I'm not talking about when someone says another way to do the task but when someone repeats the same way to do something.
