"Roll it!" for iOS - Classic Yahtzee dice game for blind users

App Developer

Hello there,

My name is Andy Abgottspon and I am the developer of "Roll it!". It is a classic Yahtzee dice game for old and young. Over time I received a lot of valuable feedback from blind users to help improve the game for their needs, so I thought I'd share this here.

I was really glad to hear that blind users like my app and felt honoured that some consider it their favourite app on iOS. Some even use it to play with friends over Bluetooth or across the internet.

I hope you like it! Let me know if you have any questions or feedback.

You can find "Roll it!" on the AppStore or via the following link:

Take care,
Andy

Improvement and Suggestion

Hello Andy,

Thanks for taking the time and visiting AppleVis and giving us a shout out!

I personally love your game. This is one of the few games that I actually have on my device. Not only the few games that I have on my device but that I play regually.

There are two things that I sure love to see done if you could?

The first thing is that along the top on the Main Page or in the Players tab are three tabs. Those three tabs are not clear in what they are. Voice Over has some weird labeling for them.

If it were possible I would have them label as like:
Single Player Game, Multiplayer Bluetooth Game, Multiple Player Internet Game.

Lastly, the only thing I sure love to see is a turn by turn game. As you see such as Hanging with Friends for example.

So for example. I could have a multiple games going with a number of friends. When it is my turn. I could roll my dice. Select in what I have and then it pass it to my friend for the next turn. He/she doesn't have to be online at that moment. They would simply get a push notification that a friend is waiting for you to make your move next. So that ay we don't have to be online together at the same time to play it.

So those are my two ideas so far. If I think of anything else. I'll be sure to pass them along to you.

Thanks, again for being here and asking for suggestions. :)

Translate app to Spanish

Hi Andy,

The first is that I would like to congratulate you on your game, I find it very fun and easy to use with VoiceOver.

The second is to let you know that on the main screen there are 3 buttons without a text label that is understandable for VoiceOver users.

And the third is to ask whether it would be possible to translate the application into Spanish. My English is not too good, but if you need it, I'd like to help translate.

Thank you very much and congratulations.

Hey guys, Thanks for your

App Developer

Hey guys,

Thanks for your very constructive suggestions. I will update the labels for the buttons on the first screen and make sure this makes it to the next update.

The 'deferred' turn-based mode that you mention, AnonyMouse, is a great idea! This looks like it would require a lot of changes under the hood though -- let's see if I get to it at some point.

As for the Spanish translation: I will aim to translate it for an upcoming release. Muchas gracias por ofrecer su ayuda! :)

Have a lot of fun!
Andy

HI Andy. Thank you for taking

HI Andy.
Thank you for taking the time out to say hello on AppleVis. one thing I noticed is that when I'm playing either through Game Center or bluetooth, if I leave the app to, say, reply to a text message, Roll It thinks I have left the game. Would it be possible to make it so that if I leave the app, I can come back to it for a few minutes? I understand multiple games would be an issue, but could this be done with 1 multiplayer game?
Thank you again for taking the time to check in with us. I really enjoy this game!

It's a boardgame!

Primrose1995,

Google how to play Yahtzee and you will come across instructions.

As for my suggestion, I would love, considering ti's a board game, to see what my opponent is up to on their turn.

It would be very nice if we

It would be very nice
if we could roll the dice
just by shaking the device.
That way you could control
just how the dice roll.
When you tilt the device
you would throw all the dice
and the greater the tilt and force
the farther they'd be flung of course.
lol

Bots?

Maybe I didn't notice it, but is there any way to play with a bot instead of a person? I'd like to play around with the app but don't know anyone who has the app to play with and I'd like to be able to play on my own time.

I miss the days of playing games with just the phone haha!

You can by simply adding only

App Developer

You can by simply adding only one player in the Players tab. Of course you won't have anyone to compete against, but can still play to improve your own highscore.

I've only played by myself so far

Hi! I've always played Roll It by myself so far, which is good from the point of view of trying to beat my own high score, but I'm definitely in favour of Anonymouse's suggestion that we could play against others and get push notifications when they've had their turn, which is what happens in another Yathzee-style game, Dice With Buddies, as well as in Hanging With Friends. I play Roll It in English, so I've no idea whether this app exists in other languages, but if it can be translated into other languages, at least the most common ones, that means that non-English-speakers will also be able to play this excellent game.

Playing in against about

Playing in against about would be pretty cool. As I said before though, the thing I really want to be old to do is to shake the phone to roll the dice, as I've accidentally triple tap the roll dice button and ended up rolling twice, losing a turn.

We should have the choice

I personally think we should have the choice between shaking the device to roll the dice and double-tapping the button as we do now. I've often found that accidentally shaking my iPhone has happened much more than accidentally double-tapping a button, that's why I'd like this choice in Roll It if shaking to roll the dice is added in a future version.

Shaking to roll has been

App Developer

Shaking to roll has been supported since the beginning. Can you confirm that this is truly not working? It should even give you a sound as feedback while rolling.

sorry, wrong bug

Sorry, Andy. I gave you the wrong info. I was thinking about tilting the device to roll the dice. I've been shaking it from the beginning, but the dice roll before I stop shaking the phone, and then start being shaken and rolled again before i can hold the ones I want.
