Announcement: Email subscriptions are currently disabled

Unfortunately, we have had to temporarily disable the subscription facility on this site which enables users to receive email notifications of new content. As some of you will have noticed, the site has been heavily hit by a rather nasty spambot over the past 24 hours. Although we use multiple tools to prevent these from posting to the site, this spambot has managed to circumvent those. So, rather than have this spam being mailed out to users (most people have the subscriptions configured to send an email instantly on new content), we have decided to disable them completely until this spambot has been neutralised. Our apologies to those who have received notifications of these spam posts and to those who like to receive notifications. We hope to have these back again soon. In the meantime, remember that you can follow @AppleVis on Twitter to see what’s happening on the site.

Is there a way you could maybe send out an e-mail, or tweet, etc. to let us know when the notifications are back up? that would be awesome! :) thank you all so much for everything you do, this site is an invaluable resource for those of us who are blind or visually impaired. :)

Thanks for the heads up. I

Thanks for the heads up. I run a blog podcast running wordpress. Is there any way I can protect it so my podcast blog does not get hit even though I'm pretty much filtered against spam bots using a plugin to do such things? Again thanks for the notice of what happened and be blessed to the apple vis team. I would not worry. I'm sure they will send out a tweet when they are back up and running. Just filter the applevis search and you will see everything.

I know that a number of people are missing these email alerts, so I’m hoping that we’ll be able to enable them again within the next 24 hours.

Lol. actually I'm beginning to get used to the streamline interface that you guys have now with out the subscribe to user heading always present. Can it be possible that if a user does not want to subscribe to any email alerts that section can be toggled off for their profile? I don't code in the cms you use so I don't even know if this is possible, but this is just a suggestion. Thanks.

Just a quick note to confirm that email subscriptions have now been re-enabled. Although one doesn’t like to tempt fate, it does appear that the specific measures we took against this particularly nasty spambot are currently working. Long may this last!
