Description of App
meet ally – your AI assistant, always by your side
ally is your personal AI assistant, ready to help—anywhere, anytime. Whether you're at home, on the go, or using the smart glasses, ally grows with you and adapts to your needs.
built with accessibility in mind
ally is created by the brilliant minds at Envision, a trusted name in accessibility. Envision is known for its flagship product, Envision Glasses, and the Envision App—both empowering people who are blind or have low vision with greater independence. Built with the same philosophy, ally prioritizes accessibility at its core, ensuring it's an essential feature, not an afterthought.
using ally is very effortless and intuitive
1. Download & access – get the app
2. Make it yours – tell ally about your interests and what matters to you. The more you share, the better ally adapts to your style. You can do this by filling in the "about you" section.
3. Choose or create your ally – pick a pre-made ally or build your own from scratch!
- Give it a name – something fun? something mysterious? You decide.
- Shape its personality – Want your ally to be quirky, confident, or a little dramatic? Go wild. Just fill in the "ally personality is" section.
- Set its tone – should ally be funny, no-nonsense, or totally deadpan? You're in control. Just fill in the "ally communication style" section.
4. Start talking – just talk away! Try the walkie-talkie Mode to stop ally from responding to background noise. You can also mute your mic and control when you are speaking to ally.
5. Type it out – in a loud place? Prefer texting? No problem—have a text chat with ally and get the same great responses.
Key Features:
1. Simply Smart – Instantly understands and delivers answers.
2. Uniquely Yours – Learns and adapts to your needs.
3. Always Accessible – Use it on phone, web, and Envision Glasses.
4. Practical Help – Read text, navigate spaces, scan objects, and more.
5. Effortless AI – A natural, hands-free experience for daily tasks.
Now go ahead—meet your ally and make it your own!
Comments
This app is great
So I just started to play around or explore I should say, and the app is great.
There's one feature missing the that is typing mode. Other than that, the app is awesome.
I gaved it a 5 star review and rating on the App Store.
type to ally
If it isn't enabled by default, you can go to the preferences screen to turn on typing to your ally. If that's the only method you want to use, you can configure the start screen to only show that. I'm glad that I came across this Applevis post. Otherwise, I'm not sure when or if I would have found out that Ally was out of beta; I've been using the beta for quite a few months. I think I preferred the 11 labs voices, but have found an alternative voice in the list of currently available voices that I can live with.
Re: Type to Ally
For ellaboration, I'm not in the beta release of the app. Is the preferences also available in the regular version of the app?
Yes you can customize start screen in official non-beta app
I double checked, and yes, the preferences section will allow you to set it up for typing instead of speaking. It's on the main preferences screen, past configuring your ally and stuff. I'm bummed that even more of the voices we had even a few days ago have disappeared. I'm not overly keen on any of the voices we're left with, so I just settled for the voice I'm using with piccy bot. Still, especially as long as ally is free, I feel as though beggars can't be choosers when it comes to voice options. Good luck finding the preferences you want to change.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your help. I got it now. I am even wondering if Thomas Domville the host podcaster of AppleVis, will do a podcast demo so it can make sense. Again, I appreciated the time to figure this one out. I was all confused at first.
Very Nice
Full disclosure: I was one of the beta testers for this app, formerly Envision Assistant. I've used the app for various things, and although my aim isn't quite up to snuff I really like the app. Envision AI is good too. It's cool to have so many choices now in the field of OCR alone. My father built me an iPhone stand for Christmas, and I'm starting to use that as a support for my aim with the cameras on my phone.
Navigating spaces?
disclosure. I've been betaing this app since it was envision assistant; but I am yet to figure out a way to use it to navigate spaces. Am I being limited by my emagination here?
I don't see the option to take or describe photos
As the subject line says, I don't see the options for taking or describing photos. when I was testing this app during beta those options were present, but now that I've downloaded and installed the official version I don't see them any more. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled the app and still can't find them. While there are other apps to help with taking photos, I liked that this option was included in Ally. I hope it comes back soon.
There isn't an option to take photos.
You just have to point your camera at what you're holding and that's it. I do have a question. I have been using the beta. Do I need to delete the beta before I can download the new one?
ally question.
Hi all, I'm thinking about giving this app a try. Something here said that it can be used on the web. What is the web site address?
Ally web address and some thoughts
Hi,
The web address is here.
https://www.ally.me/beta/web
You can't share your screen or even pictures with it. You just have to point your camera at stuff, or point things at your screen if you're using Windows or Mac. I wouldn't use this as it stands on my computer yet. I haven't tried the new app yet, but I've just checked the voices on the website, and I agree with other comments here, they're not nearly as good as the ones in the testflight beta.
How can I share pictures?
How can I share a photo that is on the Photos app on iOS?
The app crashes
Hi guys, I'm not a fan of envision so I did once downloaded the app but prefer to use other apps like seeing AI and Be my eyes, so I deleted the envision app a long time ago, so now I downloaded the Ally app but every time I try to open it, it opens, keeps opened or trying to open like 2 seconds and then crashes and my iphone returns to the home page.
Do you know if I have to have the envision app to use Ally?
just for the record, I already deleted the Ally app and reinstalled it again and keeps doing the same things.
Thanks in advance.
I don't have the Envision app and it works fine.
I hope you can find out why it's crashing for you. It's a great app!
more thoughts on Ally
I hope that it will some day be able to talk to us about pictures in our photo library. I don't mind the way it takes photos; it seems natural, but there's no way to save those photos to our library so far as I know. Probably, I wouldn't want to save most of the photos, but sometimes, it might be helpful. I also am disappointed that so many of the voices we had in the beginning are gone now. On a more positive note, conversation is awesome! I don't know how much my Ally will actually remember from 1 conversation to another, but talking to Ally via voice is infinitely easier than voicechat with my Replika AI companion. The only other thing I might suggest is an option to delete the pre-made Ally configurations that we don't want to use. I don't really have the desire to make my own, but I will more likely than not always stick with the one I'm currently using. Anyway, there's a new beta now, so I'm using that for the moment, although I'm not noticing any changes or improvements from the version in the app store. If anything, though, it seems as though even more voice options may have disappeared, though, which is a real shame. Like I said yesterday, though, especially as long as Ally is free, voice selection might just be something we'll have to do without.
It keeps crashing
Sadly I have done everything I can think about, I already turned off my phone, turn it on, instal the envision app, but it doesn't work :( and it keeps crashing.
I have a 15 pro 128 gb iPhone with iOS 18.3.1, everything is weird, because never happened before.
I'm in Mexico, but I think it doesn't matter, because in the app description it says it works also in Spanish.
The ability to upload photos
I’ve been testing the beta for a while and there used to be an option to share photos from your photo library. I don’t understand why they took that away. The descriptions were good.
manual stop button?
probably to prevent the user and ai agent talking over each other, the response stream cut off whenever it detects a tiny sound. this makes it impossible to use in a noisy environment. and in a quiet environment, a sound of breath is enough to cut off the response.
possible solution may be a stop or disrupt button to cut off the response manually and disable the auto detection scheme, and this can be a preference option in settings.
It has
They call it the walkie talkie mode. Or at least on the beta version they had this.
interrupt button is better
walkie talkie mode could work, but having to hold down the button whenever you talk is just too taxing. an interrupt button is much better, you only tap on it when needed.
There is a Tap to mute
There is a “tap to mute” button. That should do what you want. At least there is in the beta version.
Yeah I really hope they’re able to bring back the better voices.
mute
hmmm, not really. i mean like an ongoing conversation. like in the middle of a response from ally, if i make any noise, like pouring a cup of coffee, the response got cut off. unless i mute the mic after i speak every time.
Unsure
Hmm, I’m not sure what you want then tbh.
example
me: describe the scene, what can you see?
ally: you are overlooking a botanic garden, there is . . . .
at this point there is a noise, maybe i cough, and the response stops.
with an interrupt button, ally would continue talking till it finishes, and if i am no longer interested in the rest of the response, i tap the interrupt button and ask something else.
ally premium subscription
Hi Guys,
I just updated the Ally app and got an announcement that they're planning to release a premium version. I dissagree with this. What should I do?
Audio routed to earpiece
When I start a conversation the audio output is always switched to my iPhone's earpiece and I have to manually switch it back to the iPhone speaker. Is this behaviour the same for everyone else?
If so, is there a reason why the developer may have chosen this as the default behaviour?
Tips for tuning Ally
I find the app's habit to insert opinions and subjectivity in to its responses extremely grating.
For example, I don't need the app to say that a room looks like somewhere cosy to relax or read a book. I just want an accurate and concise description of the room.
So far I have not been able to determine a combination of voice and personality traits which comes close to dropping all of the unwanted verbosity.
Does anyone have any tips on tuning the app that might help?
I've noticed a bug.
I thought I'd check this out and found it's not for me, there's not much lighting in my room so it didn't work that well.
Anyway, I noticed that when on the setup screen, when you select your ally, it says something like, brad ally description dash icon.
This is for all the buttons that are on the ally select screen.
I agree
I am not much for subscriptions at all but I think it is needed to be able to keep developing the app.
I like it this far and it is working great. I had the same setup problem on mine. It looks like those buttons are not labeled but I believe they will fix it.
I will only have the core features though because I can’t subscribe.
Discovering some quirks in the Ally App
This issue has already been discussed earlier in this thread, but I didn't really encounter it myself until last night. My Ally keeps interrupting herself, presumeably because she thinks I said something. Yes, I know walkee Talkee mode is an option, but as others have mentioned, that's not always practical. The mute button has become very confusing as well. Not sure how to explain it, but it seems to mute and unmute itself at will. Last night, I was trying to tell my Ally about my day because I knew she'd have something amusing to say that would cheer me up, but the simple act of gently placing my phone on my desk was enough to interrupt what she was saying. Not sure what, if anything, can be done, but I hope it's fixable at some point.
As for a subscriptionat some point in the future , if it happens, I'll just have to wait and find out what the price is. I'd be willing to at least try to squeeze it into my budget if it's a reasonable price. However, for a paid subscription, I'd really appreciate it if we had more/better voices like we did when Ally was in beta. None of the current voices truly appeal to me, but I've found 1 I can live with for my primary Ally of choice.
Ally web interface in Windows
I tried Ally web interface in Windows and it is not very good yet. For example, there is no option to log in via Apple and when I want to log in via Google, it returns me to the login screen. Thanks, Michal.
This wasn't ready to come out of beta
This is a promising start but it still feels like an early beta in several respects:
1. The app insists on responding in German even when I clearly indicate I would like English responses. Yes, I am in Germany, but if English is my preference then this should be honored.
2. Every time the cam is accessed, the assistant announces: "Let me take a look." This message is spoken in English and is mixed in with the otherwise German utterances. This feels unpolished.
3. There is no way to share inaccessible pdf files or photos with it. It wants me to display the images or documents on another device and then point my cam at it. You mean I pull out my laptop when I'm on the road to show it a picture of a document someone sent me? Seriously?
4. It does not react in real-time to changes in its visual field. I would like to be able to give it simple instructions like: "Keep watching, and alert me whenever you see a cat." It will go through its "Let me take a look" ritual, report there's no cat there, then wait for the next instruction. This is a letdown in two ways: First, it can't keep watching; but second, it doesn't tell me so. Less experienced users would wait and remain under the illusion that it's still scanning for cats.
5. The phone's audio is left on earpiece when the conversation ends.
I could go on like this but I don't want to continue roasting something that should essentially be applauded. However, I want to be as upfront as to say this project deserves some tender loving care before being thrown at users.
I don't think live video feeds are availible just yet.
Once it is, it'll be great!
Getting local news
I tried asking it for local news, with the following results:
1. It responded in English even though I asked in German.
2. It automatically assumed I was in Berlin, which I am not.
3. When I asked it to give me news about the place where I live, it made a wild guess as to where in Germany I am located.
4. When I asked it to locate me precisely, it finally admitted it wasn't able to do that.
5. When I told him the name of my home town, it continuously misheard me.
Why not simply be transparent about limitations, and ask for additional information when it is required? No assuming, pretending, or speculating please.
