[Closed] Seeking an Experienced Mac User to Join our Volunteer Team

By AppleVis, 11 March, 2025

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

Are you passionate about the use of Apple products, particularly macOS accessibility and beta testing? Do you have some free time that you would like to put towards serving the community? If so, AppleVis may have an exciting volunteer opportunity for you!

AppleVis' mission is to empower people who are blind, DeafBlind, or have low vision to get the most from Apple products and services. Founded in 2010 and now a Be My Eyes company, AppleVis is lead by a small team of both employees and volunteers.

One of the most visible and impactful services that AppleVis provides to the community is testing and reporting on the accessibility of Apple software releases for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users. We have been testing and reporting to the community on accessibility bugs in Apple software since 2012. To help ensure that our coverage is as complete and comprehensive as possible, we are currently looking to recruit a new volunteer with knowledge, experience and expertise with macOS to join our Editorial Team to help us bolster our testing and overall coverage of macOS.

This is a wonderful opportunity to inform and engage with thousands of people on the leading website for blind, deaf blind, and low vision users of Apple products. AppleVis is a well-respected resource among end users, app developers, accessibility advocates, Assistive Technology experts, and people working for blind, deaf blind, and low vision agencies across the world. Plus, your efforts will have a real-world impact on the lives of those whom we serve.

Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role will be to assist with identifying, documenting, reporting, and preparing editorial content related to changes (both features and bugs) in macOS and other Apple platforms for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users. Volunteers also work on other areas of personal interest (such as podcasting, special event coverage, blogging, answering user questions on the site) and help guide daily decision-making. Finally, volunteers support the team with forum moderation and other administrative tasks as their time allows. These tasks can include:

  • Assisting with the day-to-day decision-making involved with maintaining and developing a popular community-based website.
  • Assisting with preparing editorial content for the AppleVis website.
  • Assisting with reviewing and managing prospective podcast episodes submitted by the community for posting to AppleVis.
  • General moderation and management of user-submitted content and comments.
  • Reviewing of App Directory entries for accuracy and completeness, updating information where necessary.
  • Managing user registrations and assisting people with any questions that they may have about their AppleVis user account.
  • Responding to inquiries about the AppleVis website and its use in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Undertaking advocacy for accessibility of Apple products and related applications.

Applicant qualifications

At AppleVis, we want our Editorial Team and the content we produce to be representative of and fully welcoming to the community we serve. We welcome and encourage everyone who has a desire to get involved with our work and who has the necessary qualifications to apply. While the primary focus of this call for volunteers is to fill a gap in our macOS coverage, if you have expertise or strong interest in another area discussed above and/or a lived experience or perspective not yet represented on our team, we would love to hear from you as well.

To be considered for this volunteer position, an applicant:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must use macOS as their primary computing platform on a daily basis.
  • Must have prior experience with and actively test macOS beta software.
  • Must be willing and able to beta test major new releases of macOS, including Apple's annual major software updates.
  • Must have sufficient time to dedicate to AppleVis on a weekly basis.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be willing to give input into daily decision-making and assist with forum moderation as needed.
  • Must be willing to maintain confidentiality of AppleVis and other internal information.

Important notes

As this is a volunteer position, you should expect to receive no financial recompense for your involvement with AppleVis. We appreciate that the requirements that we ask for are demanding and not unlike those required for some paid positions. However, AppleVis is a popular, valued and respected resource within the space that we occupy; we want to ensure, therefore, that we are meeting the needs of those we serve and that we are up front about our requirements for team members. Not only is this in the best interests of AppleVis and our community, but it means that those involved will personally draw genuine value from their participation.

Not that I'd throw my hat in the ring for this, far too opinionated and don't have the time, but, just to help the recruitment process, I suggest giving more specifics on teh time required per week. "Sufficient time", I don't think, is specific enough.

Thank you to all the team. It's a good reminder that many are volunteers who do this with the best intent of helping people like myself. You are all heros. Thank you.

I would've jumped on this ten years ago, back when I was crazy about trying new features, and before I became mired in other volunteer positions and activities. Best of luck to the hopeful candidates.

I would like to express my gratitude to Apple and all its volunteer and paid staff, as well as other individuals who are helping others with their knowledge in the tech industry. It is truly valuable and groundbreaking to have a platform like this, which has had a significant and positive impact on Apple’s efforts to address major accessibility issues that might otherwise have remained unresolved. I am grateful for the existence of Applevis.

I'm thinking this over, but it sounds like a wonderful opportunity. While I have a bit of experience beta-testing other stuff such as 3rd-party iOS apps, I've never beta-tested any of Apple's own software. That said, I totally agree with Mert. Apple and AppleVis have both been excellent and I'm excited for the future. I for one, never even would've dreamt of using an iPhone because of the flat screen. However, Apple changed all that and I am eternally grateful for it. Additionally, this will give me more of an opportunity to utilize VoiceOver's Braille support since I now have full-on access to a Braille display courtesy of HumanWare and NLS.

Not that my English is not good enough; but as it's my second language, I always check my grammar before sending comments like this and I wanted to use Apple's writing tools this time. I wrote the text and I am sure that I wrote Apple Vis, not Apple there; but Apple Intelligence didn't like it, I guess. As I'm writing this comment; I had writing tools proofread the text again and it changes the word applevis to something else; for example in my case it changed the word to "Apple's" this time. Apple doesn't recognize AppleVis.

Hope you consider regions other than English speaking world in the selection of the volunteers.
