I wanted to share a warning regarding Ugreen's recently launched NAS (Network Attached Storage) products, which I recently learned are not accessible with VoiceOver.

After considering purchasing one of their new 2-bay NAS systems to replace my aging Synology, I contacted Ugreen support to inquire about VoiceOver compatibility with their management software on both macOS and iOS. Their response was disappointing:

Thank you for your interest in our NAS products.

At the moment, our NAS management software does not support VoiceOver, and unfortunately, there is no current plan to implement full screen reader accessibility.

I've responded to express my disappointment in their position, emphasizing that this isn't just a poor business decision that excludes potential customers, but that it's fundamentally the wrong approach. I urged them to reconsider their stance on accessibility and equal access.

While I've previously had positive experiences with other Ugreen products, I cannot recommend their NAS solutions to any VoiceOver users based on this information. Hopefully they will reconsider their position on making their products accessible.

I'd rather have the honest answer than none at all, or worse, a deception.

And now you have ammunition with which to argue for regulation like the European Accessibility Act, if such a proposal ever gains traction where you are (and imperfect and patronising as the EAA is).

D-Link make nice mobile hotspot devices that I had hoped to use, but their web UI uses inaccessible switch widgets that were completely custom-drawn (not mere skins for underlying form controls, which can generally be worked around by disabling CSS). I was crushed to learn that even buying a new one wouldn't help: they said all of the models were using the same UI (and in fact the older model I purchased, which I bought specifically to avoid the touchscreen, had been updated to use the new UI). I didn't have the heart to return it.

The arc of the moral universe inevitably bends towards justice, according to some dude. Don't despair.

For your first line I perfectly agree. At least we fully know what to expect for the moment, better than talking the talk but not walking the walk (or however we say this in english?).
