Charging Airpods while using them.

Hi all.

I'm just curious, because I feel like something like this should exist. I have Airpods Pro second Gen. Obviously in order to charge them, you have to put them in the case. If you're using your phone, or computer in my case, for extended periods of time, this means you don't get to use them while they're charging.

To solve this for traveling I just got a set of Apple Earpods with an audio jack to plug into the Mac Mini. But it occurs to me that the tips of the Airpods Pro just go into the bottom of the case to charge, that's the connection.

So why couldn't you have a cable that's USB at one end, splits, and ends in two little cup thingies on the other end? Obviously the tips of the Airpods would go into the magnetic cups, and the cable would provide power, charging them while letting you use them at the same time.

I know what you're thinking, I want Airpods Max or whatever then, because they have wired support! Except I don't. I already have big headphones, on-ear, I can't use the ones that surround your ears. So I could just take those with me, I'm using them right now. But since I'm traveling, I'm trying to cut down on space, hence the Earpods.

The Airpods are honestly the best-sounding earbuds I've ever used. So it would really be handy to have a way to use and charge them at the same time. I don't think it exists, I've tried googling. But it would be cool if it did.

That is not going to happen. People get AirPod pro 2 because they are wireless. Suggest that you use one in one ear and after one is ready to be charge, use the other. Only suggestion I have. The pro 2 last several hours for me. If I am not using the phone, I put them back to charge even if is for 10 minutes or more. It helps.

Is that cable idea bonkers or would it actually work? I would buy such an accessory if it existed, although Apple would charge an arm and a leg for it.

Which arm and leg? If you are right handed, and apple ask for it? would yu pay?

The point isn't to make them permanently wired. The point is to make them temporarily wired while they charge so you don't have to stop using them. To be fair though, I'm thinking of using them with something like a Mac Mini which has its own power. I get that this could be less appealing if you were hooking them into a phone to charge, although you could use a portable power bank.

And I mean, if I'm bnaging outsome music, on the phone or computer, no, I'm not gonna go with one ear. I'm not thinking of this for calls or anything, but serious work.

The idea of taking a power supply, possibly even mains power, connecting it to a device that burrows deep into your ears and then turning it on seems shocking to me. Pun intended.
From a Health and Safety perspective this is a terrible accident waiting to happen.
Recommend sticking to charging one Bud at a time as already suggested.

I'm not particularly fond of in-ear headphones, but with 12 hours of battery life, the Beats Flex last long enough for extended computer sessions, plus they cost a third of the price of the AirPods Pro 2, with the biggest caveat being that they run on the ancient W1 chip and have the automatic device switching feature disabled. If I recall correctly their audio signature is similar to all AirPods, but it's been a very long time since I owned them so there's a very high chance that I might be wrong.

Like the original wired ones, with an audio jack. They are ... not that great. But they'll work for traveling. I tried some sort of Beats back when I was going through finding headphones. They were terrible. Probably not quite as bad as these wired ones, but still.

They're small enough that I can take them and the Airpods Pro and use them either just for the Mac Mini or use the Pro mostly and use them while the Pro are charging. I could use them with everything, I got a 3.5 to lightning adapter before I had the Pro, but they don't really stay in your ears that well, so I don't feel like having them falling out on the plane.
