A Dark Room for iOS is now 100% playable with VoiceOver

App Developer
Hello everyone, I'm the developer of A Dark Room. I just wanted to say that recent updates make it 100% playable via VoiceOver. If you have any questions or feedback, please post here and I'll respond as quickly as I can. The game is an RPG, and is best experienced without knowing too much about what will happen. But if you need a description (which contains very minor spoilers). It's in the next paragraph. Minor Spoilers in: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 A Dark Room is an RPG where you start off in a room with a fire. As the game progresses, events will slowly unlock... soon, you'll have to manage a small civilization, buy buildings and equipment, and venture out into a treacherous world with real time combat (all playable with VoiceOver). There is a very deep storyline and much to uncover in the game. Including an alternate ending. Also, to help raise awareness about the blind using iOS devices, I've written a blog entry about it. Please feel free to share the link with anyone who could benefit from reading about how to make iOS apps accessible: http://amirrajan.net/software-development/2013/12/29/if-you-are-reading-this-you-are-not-blind/ And here is the link to the game: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/a-dark-room/id736683061?mt=8 Hope you enjoy. Sincerely, Amir (creator of A Dark Room for iOS)

#1 A Sincere Thank You

I haven't played the game yet, I plan on installing it sometime today. But I just want to say thank you for your efforts in making it accessible, and for taking accessibility so seriously.

#2 A Second Thank You

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

I, too, want to express my deep gratitude and appreciation for your efforts in accessibility. Not only did you make your app playable for Voiceover users, you took the time to try to raise awareness and help other developers. So, on behalf of Applevis, thank you!

#3 You're welcome!

App Developer

I hope you like the game Brooke. Please let others know about it. I rely heavily on word of mouth recommendations. It was surprising how easy it was to add accessibility. I'll do my best to let people in the development community know. Just doing what I can.

#4 Thank you for the kind words

App Developer

I'm glad I can provide a deep gaming experience to all! It means a lot that the AppleVis editorial team reached out. If there is any other changes I can make, please let me know. I plan to do another release in February with a few more accessibility tweaks. And please let others know about the game if at all possible. It certainly was a labor of love for me and I want as many people to play it as possible. I don't plan on increasing the price for the game in the foreseeable future, either.

#5 Minor update (version 1.3) release

App Developer

Version 1.3 just released to the App Store. It includes some minor accessibility tweaks and a hint to an alternate ending. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

#7 gratitude for A Dark Room

Amir, I've enthusiastically played A Dark Room to the exciting ending twice! Your "labor of love" helped me to get through a particularly tough time in my life. Thank you for providing such a fun and accessible way to tune out and heal. Sincerely, Christie

Thank you to everyone that has commented. I'm glad that I've been able to provide something that (quite literally) has helped people get through a tough time in their life. Very rewarding feeling!

#10 A dark room

Just finished playing, loved it. At end it said I could play without huts for a different ending. Have tried twice on my ipad and after getting wood, furs, etc. I get no place where I can actually start playing, can't turn my meat into dried, can't turn my furs into leather, etc. all I can do is keep adding more wood and furs, etc. am I doing something wrong?

#11 You can't build huts it's

You can't build huts it's true, but you can still build all the other buildings. You can have for example a merchant.

#12 Huts

Hi, thanks for your reply. Where would I find the merchant? I can only get wood and the traps, nothing else shows up unless I add a hut. Just finished my second game and again it said try without huts. I am using it on my ipad and it doesn't look the same as when it is on a PC.

#13 Huts

Duh! Just figured it out, either the lodge didn't show up before or I didn't see it, anyway I'm on my way. Thanks.

#14 No hits game

Hi, me again. I am well into the game, have wood, furs, etc. have purchase the trading post and compass. I have a merchant withe the following for sale, compass, cured meat, scales, teeth and a builder with the following, cart trap, hut, trading post. There is no tanner anywhere and no smokehouse. I can't go anywhere, just keep using the wood and traps. Is this a bug?
