Discussion of the state of accessible games on the Mac

App Developer

Hi,
my name is Ivan Soto, and I am a game developer. I wanted to come on here and ask you all Mac users who would like more games on the mac. I know that games for the mac are limited and I want to try to fix this. What do you guys think?

Great idea

I applaud you for your interest. Happily, its looks like all IOS games will be available on MacOS in a year or so. Apple appears to be moving to make all IOS apps accessible in MacOS, so any IOS games accessible to voiceOver users will be available if this change happens.

In the meantime, if you want to introduce a brand new game to MacOS for VoiceOver users, I vote for any. text based multiple choice games.

yes

heck yes, we need more stuff for mac. I don't want to see a flood of text junk either, I want more audio based stuff, and not blindfold stuff either, I mean good games, with great stories.

Something similar to Pacman

Something similar to "Pacman Talks" or "Dynaman", both Windows titles, would be awesome for the Mac, in my opinion.

Agreed. I think that someone

Agreed. I think that someone should find a way to port some of the older titles like ESP pinball xtreme from the old days of Draconis to the mac side. There were/are a lot of great games for windows, why are there not some for mac? It'll take time, but I think this can happen.

aye

heck yeah. I think a good game for mac would be a flight simulator

yes

I would like to see some RPG's. I'm not sure if code 7 would count as one. something that's like Entombed or AHC.

Code 7

I wouldn't consider Code 7 an RPG. it's more a choice-driven narrative text adventure with puzzles and full voice acting. It's still a fantastic experience however, and one likely unmatched in terms of sheer quality and production values. It stands out in that it isn't just an audio game made with the blind in mind. It's a mainstream sighted game developed by an indie game developer who thought it worth while to make it accessible to the blind as well as sighted. It's a rarity, and genuinely a pretty good game, even by sighted gaming standards. Anyone with even a passing interest in a good story or a science fiction setting should check it out. The first episode is even free and gives a decent introduction to it.
Otherwise, while I don't have a Mac, I would love to see more accessible games come out. What I'd especially love to see are more mainstream games that could be made accessible made accessible.
Granted there are a lot of games that would be hard, especially 3D ones. But there are a whole lot under the "Point and Click adventure" umbrella which I feel could quite easily be made so.
I would love to see games like Unavowed, Technobabilyn, The Kat Lady, Downfall etc etc made accessible. Particularly the aforementioned Kat Lady and Downfall, which are actually side scrolling adventures, those I feel could very easily be made accessible using even a computer's built in voice guidance for reading the small amount of in-game text, audio beeps or something when near an interactive object, and maybe a track of audio description for scenes that could really use it. There's a whole lot of dialogue in the game, but some visual stuff too which could easily be helped out by some DVS.

More games for Mac would be awesome..

Text based games are boring and played out. Soul Bound and A Blind Legend are ok, but have some levels that seem unbeatable on Mac.. I'm up for a challenge, but sometimes I feel like they didn't play some levels before they approved them for the game on Mac. More adventure, and also more realistic relatable games. Worlds and stories you can lose yourself in. Think outside the box.

Why not all?

Forgive me for being naive, but why not create a MacOS app that would allow users to open and use all IOS apps? That way, all the IOS games and other apps we like would become accessible on the Mac.

Not a bad idea.

I never understood why the same apps accessable on IOS weren't also accessable for Mac OS.. I'm no computer expert though..

Eye opening experiences.. Pun intended. lol

Sometimes in life you must eat crow.. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've done so, and I've been shown the error of my ways.. A Blind Legend was either a fixed bug, or blind luck on my part.. Soul Bound was thanks to the eyes of my girlfriend, but I'm passed the level I've been stuck on for months. Literally months. haha Seriously people; lets help each other out.. Advice, information, recommendations, and all around positive words.
