Hi all,
I just recently bought an iPad 9th gen to replace my iPad Pro 10.5. I have been having keyboard issues on both with VoiceOver. This is with both the Apple Smart Keyboard and Logitech Slim Folio (I believe that's the name?).
It'll work as normal for a bit - I'll be able to type normally in, for example, Pages and Safari. But then it'll act like I have the Full Keyboard Access setting turned on (or off?). I believe I have toggled this setting.
So, for example, trying to enter a space in Safari brings up the Spotlight menu, pressing H goes to home rather than entering the H key, and certain keys will not work.
I also have Sticky Keys turned off.
This is extremely frustrating. I bought the 9th gen iPad thinking it was an issue with my old iPad Pro - stupid, impulsive decision of mine, and the iPads worked fine at the store. Completely defeats the purpose of having an iPad in my opinion.
I'm just wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue.

I'm sorry to say, it's not…
I'm sorry to say, it's not just you. The iPad with voiceover and keyboard is broken and has been for a long time. It's such a shame as the iPad with a keyboard is kinda the perfect solution for most people. I'd suggest voting with your wallet and going windows surface. Until we stop buying back into this technology whilst nothing is being done about it, we're only making their lives easier. Fact is, features that have compelled us to purchase products are broken. Return them, get a refund and look elsewhere. It's so incredibly frustrating, believe me, you're not the only one in this situation.
Well, keyboards with smart…
Well, keyboards with smart connectors are just nightmares for iPad users. I got one then replaced it with a bluetooth keyboard. Experience is much better.
Slin folio Logitech
Sad when it works it works well. This is an Apple issue. I am curious if the keyboard made by apple work better. If so, is that legal?
Apple keyboards
Sadly, I'm having the issue with the Apple Smart Keyboard and the Logitech keyboard. It doesn't make a difference which keyboard you use.
second the bluetooth keyboard (any bluetooth keyboard)
VO doesn't yet play nicely with pointer control. Get any bluetooth keyboard, like that zag option or anything you don't mind carrying around. Turn off full keyboard access and you should be fine. My complaints about sticky modifier keys have gone down significantly ever since i bought a third party bluetooth keyboard

Slin folio from logitech is a bluetooth and have issues. Where do I go to turn off what suggested? I think I did but do not recall.
Turning off full keyvoard access
To turn off full keyboard access, go to settings, general, keyboard, and turn off full keyboard access
full keyboard access
Wanted to add a correction to previous comment. Full keyboard access is under accessibility > keyboard. Good luck!
As far as I recall, a year…
As far as I recall, a year back when I dipped my toe in the mirky iPad waters, the Logitech folio felt like the nicer of the two keyboards with a better finish on the casing and more keys. The issues arose when shutting the keyboard up as, unlike the apple magic keyboard, it didn't put voiceover to sleep and it would continue to talk. Is this still the case?... Ha, "the case", I'm funny when I don't even intend to be.
Later this week I'm going to have a look at Microsoft's offerings. Have found that the proof reading aspect of Microsoft word is excellent and usable on mac though with a few difficulties. I'm hoping I can pick up a small writing machine with keyboard to use on the road purely for work and keep the Mac at home for my more technical hobbies like 3D design and printing.
If I make the jump, and it's cool with the admins, I might do a bit of a comparison between my experiences with iPad and those on a surface machine.
Re: As far as I recall, a year…
Hey Oliver,
Your experience of using a Mac or iPad compared to a Microsoft Surface would definitely be of interest to many in our community, and I'm sure it would be valuable for those who are considering switching to or from a Mac or iPad. As a comparison article, it would comfortably be within our posting guidelines. We look forward to reading your insights and experiences!
Thanks for the reply. Does…
Thanks for the reply. Does seem to be something that is lacking out here in the wild west of the internet.
Would love to be able to go straight for iPad, I know how they work, even if there are bits and bobs wrong with them, but think it's time to try something different. I'm sure there is a suitable Einstein quote here about doing the same thing again and again....

OK. How it would affect the command, fn, control key? Would I be still able to use them?
