Phone switches to speaker during a call

Hi, I'm an iPhone owner for the first time as of a week and a half ago. I've had an iPod Touch for two years so I'm very familiar with iOS and how it works already, but there's one thing I can't figure out on my phone. (iPhone 4S) When I'm on a call and take the phone from my ear, it switches to speaker mode. Every other iPhone owner I've asked says this doesn't happen with their device. Is this a feature when using VoiceOver or something? Is there a way to change that setting? Thanks in advance for any help AJ

It's a feature

I don't know if it's something you can turn off or not. I don't remember seeing an option for it. Most of the time I find it useful, though it can be a bit annoying if you don't hold the phoen right up to your ear.

Speaker on iPhone

Hi AJ: Glad you joined the iPhone world. It is really quite a unique experience, especially when you are just getting into using it and are constantly amazed at what it can do. As faras your issue, I too have noticed this. The trick is to make sure that you are holding your iPhone close to your ear and vertical if you do not wish your calls to switch to speaker mode; either that or do your calls while using headphones. The iPhone is set to switch to speaker phone when you hold it away from your head and angle it in any way other than pretty much vertical. It takes some getting used to, but is very manageable once you get used to how it needs to be held to remain a private call. Hope this helps a bit. Regards.

It is a feature that is built in to the phone.
