Introducing zWord: a fully VoiceOver-accessible word game

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to introduce zWord, a word game I developed with VoiceOver accessibility at the heart of the experience.

zWord brings several different word challenges together in one app, including crosswords, classic word riddles, word-building games, and synonym puzzles. The interface has been designed to work fully with VoiceOver, so players can navigate the app, understand the game state, and enjoy each challenge without needing sighted assistance.

My goal with zWord is to offer an accessible, varied, and enjoyable word-game experience for players who use VoiceOver. Whether you enjoy solving clues, testing your vocabulary, creating words from letters, or finding synonyms, there is something different to explore.

You can download zWord from the App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/zword-word-puzzle/id6790643465

I would be very happy to hear your feedback, suggestions, and experiences with the game. Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, and input from the AppleVis community would be especially valuable as I continue improving zWord.

Thank you for taking a look, and I hope you enjoy playing!

Best,
Meriç

This is a terrific app. I have only tried lucky dice so far, but am going to try the other games out as well. I also love the 12-hourly rewards.

Thank you for building this with accessibility in mind! Not many developers do. I'm excited to see where this goes! Here are some thoughts:
Since VoiceOver already reads everything, voice alerts when VO is already active are mostly redundant. Making them regular VO announcements seems best, from my perspective anyway.
It's easy to hit the wrong letter on the keyboard by mistake. Maybe add an optional setting that waits for a spacebar press before checking input.
In the first game, it's not necessary to include the text "You need to fill this in" for every blank space. Once you get the hang of it, all you really need is the word "Blank". If you plan to implement any sort of tutorial, that info would be useful there. Otherwise, it would make the most sense to put it in the VoiceOver Hints, so more experienced players could have a cleaner interface.
Overall, I'm enjoying this game. Thanks again, and I hope the feedback helps!

Firstly, thanks for making a game with accessibility at its heart.

I tried a few of the puzzles and they worked well enough. I would echo the comment above that some of the labels are a bit too verbose but otherwise I didn't have any problems.

However, I really didn't get on with the crosswords game.

At the top I was given 4 anagrams. Then under seemed to be a bit of a bewildering grid. It's possible I might be being thick but it didn't really compute in my head as being anything like a crossword grid. It looks like I need to go through each box trying painfully to find the one I want and then double tap, then enter in the single character and then move on. It wasn't obvious to me where the boxes were so even finding where I was supposed to type was tedious, but then doing it letter by letter just tested my patience a bit far. I think I started putting in the answer for question 3 but got so fed up I quit the app and uninstalled. I've not tried any crossword apps before so not sure exactly how it should be done, but I think if I am trying to solve a clue I want to be putting in all the letters in one go, not having to find each box. I wasn't even sure if the answers intersected like a normal crossword game as they all seemed to belong to just one answer as far as I could tell.

I should say I liked word puzzles a lot more when I could see and do get irritated a little easily with them now I can't, so I don't think this app is particularly for me. But I think for any word puzzle fanatics they will find a lot to like.

I'd be interested to know how anyone else finds crosswords and whether it's just me.

I see that I have 10 coins to work with. I spun the wheel and got another. I've played one round, and am back to 10. I don't see where I can buy more coins. I know that I will need more. How can I buy more? Thanks.

I agree with the previous post about the crossword puzzles. I attempted a puzzle yesterday, and was given 3 clues. After filling in all the relevant letters, there were other edit. boxes which needed to be filled in when all the boxes for the clues had already been filled in. I don't understand what these other boxes mean, and they only appeared to work with random letters.

I downloaded and tried the game yesterday. i also recorded a video for it, that I'll likely release in the near future.

Overall, I really like most of the games. I don't know any other languages than English, so the language game didn't do much for me. However, i still think it's a great game, and for people who do know, or are learning other languages, it's great.

I had a lot of fun with the other games though. The app might need a larger dictionary and info for things like names, cities, etc. I had 2 W cities the game didn't recognize, but I like that game anyway.

The crosswwords game was a little confusing, but I haven't put much time into it yet. As a low vision player, i saw the layout of the crosswords, but used VO to navigate it. Exploring by touch and swiping, I could find the beginning of each word. What confused me though was that clue 1 had 4 letters, which I unscrambled, but on the board, Word 1 seemed to have 5 spaces. So that confused me a bit. I may just need to spend more time to figure that game out more.

I quite liked all the other games though, and could see playing them regularly. I would actually love to see a one-time in-app purchase that would unlock infinite play, and disable ads. Because the game has several smaller games in it, and more could be added later. I'd say $5 to $10 would be easily reasonable for this type of unlock.

I wondered where you'd been as I haven't seen a zEdit update in a week.
This sounds like a cool new game.
I'm not great with word games however I like anograms and Cross words for a little while.
I do quickly get board of cross words.
I wanted to request a word game in the app I could never play.
Have you seen boggle on the Netflix games?
All my family play it but I can't.
The first problem is,
Sited people can see what letters from the beginning and make a plan of the first word they're going to make.
I try doing that but there's a big area where letter's are either not there or I think covered,
I don't know.
When I do try draging one letter to an intended letter,
It doesn't work because I always hit the letter beside it and end up way off the word I planned.
The second problem is that you only know you've hit a letter by the click sound it makes when you hit one.
I'm thinking the best solution is to have it speak every letter under my finger and only select it if I hold my finger there for more than a natral pause or press down so that the taptic thing does what it does when holding down after a double tapp and bringing context menus up.
That way we have an equal chance to still play and hear the letters and pick them in as just an easy way Sited people are doing.
It would be nice to be able to play in real time with real friends and family.
Even more ideal would be if it would just work with Netflix's native boggle.
I imagine that would be difficult?
You'd have to have some kind of API key?
do they have one?
Could you let me know if that's possible
if not playing with other's vire Game centre or what ever is fine by me.
thanks so much for the good stuff you and your team do.
