Our new game Wordfinder

By John from Woodside Apps, 31 January, 2018

Forum
iOS and iPadOS Gaming

Hello from Woodside Apps
We have produced a Wordfinder type game.
Mainly because I did not like the ones in the Ap Store.

The idea is to make as many words as you can from over 10,000 puzzles.

It is a paid app and as such has no
Adverts or In app purchases.
It can be played in Airplane mode with no problems at all.

We hope you enjoy the game.

All suggestions are very welcome.

Suggestion for the game word finder

By Pat Pound*

5 years 1 month ago

I appreciate the VoiceOver accessibility of this game. I also appreciate recent changes. I do suggest that you have a choice in the options to change it to touch typing mode. Voiceover users are often more comfortable using this moe. to enter letters. I did not submit the comment on the developer website because I had trouble using the audio captcha

A couple of questions

Hello
I am glad you like the game so far

When you mention touch typing do you mean the
ability to enter letters using one tap on the letter grid
while voiceover is still turned on?

Also where do you encounter an audio capture?

Many thanks for the feedback.

Touch typing this where you put your finger on the screen and lifted up when you were at the letter that you wish to type. I encountered the CAPCHA on the form on your website to submit comments. I did not see an email address in the App Store.

Thank you

I am unsure what website you visited but mine does not have a submission field.
My website is

There is a contact us link and two more to the ios and android store.

I have added the feature to the to do list.
Many thanks

Answer of the puzzle?

By tripolice

5 years 1 month ago

should there be some way to see the answer of the puzzle if one fails to solve it? or is it already there?

Hello

By John from Woodside Apps

Hello
There is no way to see all of the words that can be made in the puzzle.
You can return to a puzzle at a later date to see if you can find anymore words in it.
In the next update you get a score based on how many words you find and their average length.
The general idea is to keep on improving your
score by finding new words.
The current dictionary contains a lot of very obscure words which makes it hard to complete a puzzle.
I am currently looking into other dictionaries to see if a better
balance of play ability can be achieved.

Thank you for the feedback.

Other languages?

By Michela Botti

Hi,
Thank you for this new game that I like very much. Currently the game only includes words from English dictionary, am I correct? Is there any plan to extend the game to other languages? An Italian version of the game would be really addictive for me!

Cheers
Michela

It is really nice

The app is really nice and it is fine to practice typing in English, especially for those for whom English is not their mother tongue. Nice job, indee. I have a suggestion for standard sightless typing as mentioned before and it would be good to have a choice what way of typing to use. The more customisation, the better. Anyway, keep all my fingers crossed and look for new games.d

Good game but some issues

Hi John, once again, thanks for making the efforts on vo support and for a fun game. A couple of issues for me tho.
1. Despite the fact that you can use a letter multiple times in a single word, I got a set of letters with only 6 unique letters, with 3 duplicates. Having only 6 letters meant fewer words and less fun honestly.
2. I can’t work out if proper nouns are being accepted or not. Some seem to be, and others not. And is it just an English dictionary, or are some other languages included? I’m typing in random words I’ve never heard of and some are being accepted.
Also, on the screen where you can read the words I’ve submitted successfully, it’d be nice if I could also swipe thru the words one by one, and even tap on them to get a dictionary definition...

Two Small feature Requests

By Chelsea

5 years 1 month ago

Hi John,

Thanks for developing this game. I'm really enjoying playing it! I have two small feature requests:

  1. Could you put a "Rescramble" button on the main game screen that would randomly rearrange the letters in the grid? I find that sometines looking at the letters in a different order will give me ideas for new words.
  2. On the "List of found words" screen, VoiceOver reads all the words at once, and this gets very tedious if you've found a lot of words. I haven't found this many, but I'm guessing it would get even more annoying when you are close to the end of a puzzle and have found hundreds of words. Could you find a way to organize this screen, maybe either by putting the words on their own separate lines, or organizing like the music app with headings and a table index for the alphebetical letters?

I know this is very close to version 1.0 and I appreciate all the hard work you put in to make this fun game!

Hello
Are you looking over my shoulder?*smile
These two features are added in the next update.
I am currently working on a touch typing mode which is almost finished.
The next version will be 1.1.0 and is not too far off.
Thank you for the suggestions.

Version 1.1.0 is available.

Hello
The new version includes
A touch typing mode
The best way to use this is to go to the options menu and turn the option on.
Return to the game and then turn voiceover on or off via a voice command.

A shuffle button is now at the bottom left of the screen.

The dictionary file has been revised but is not the final answer.
As it is now quite weak on four letter words.

I am desperately trying to find a suitable dictionary for the game as the interface
is quite nice but is being let down by the dictionary's scope and flaws.

I will get it right even if it kills me.
Many thanks to all who have downloaded the game so far.

Please clarify one thing

By Rafal

One of the options mentioned in the above post is: "Return to the game and then turn voiceover on or off via a voice command." I don't know why is it so. VoiceOver is turned on or of by pressing 3 times the home button and iPhone X has a different option to enable this. Anyway, thanks for all your efforts. The more customisation, the better.

Hello
However you want to control voice over should work.
I know the voice method does work and is quite disruptive to the game
code cycle so all other methods should also work.[]famous last words

A possible bug

By Rafal

Hi John,
As previously said, I am really pleased with your apps and their accessibility for VoiceOver users.
I've updated wordfinder and I've found the following possible bugs:
This mainly concerns the touch mode on option. I've turned it on and the app crashes: When i lift my finger nothing is inserted. When I doubletap on a character it enters twice. Also the VoiceOver output overlaps with the native voice output. Please do something about it. Normally, when a blind person uses VoiceOver and sightles mode of typing, he/she lifts up the finger and a character inserts. VoicOver announces the inserted character once. It is also possible to use standard typing: doubletapping on a character which is then inserted.
Hope this will be fixed soon. I keep my fingers crossed!

Hello
You need to turn voice over off to use the touch typing mode.
I tried to avoid this but can not get the result i want with voice over on.

The game should not crash due to switching a option on or off.

Two things to try could be
Stop the game in app switcher and restart it.
Delete the game and re-install

Apologies for the trouble caused.

Thanks John for an awesome game

I got this game today. I actually bought a gift card to get it. I am really satisfied by this game. It has so many puzzles it will keep me playing. Now I have another good game. Not sure what the touch typing thing is so I deactivated it until I know what it is for. I like that it is easy to pick up and the layout is really easy.

Nevermind

I read the entire thread and now I know what touch typing means. I should have done that before.

Touch typing

By Sabrina

Can someone tell me how touch typing works? I turned off Voiceover the way I got explained. Sometimes when I press a letter, there is a click and then some strange ticking or ringing and sometimes when I release it and it types. This seems much better than the other method but I need a little bit of help.

Hi John. Thanks for the updates. While I appreciate the efforts on touch typing, I haven’t really found it to be fit for purpose unfortunately. Having to toggle VoiceOver off to use it means you can’t access anything else on the screen, including finding the word at the bottom to submit it. So you end up toggling VoiceOver on and off constantly. If it can’t be done with VoiceOver on, then I fear the feature is a non-runner. But others may disagree with me.
Also I found it is typing the letters twice for me.
I’m also having dictionary problems. It rejected “Rain” and “Fair” for example, but accepted “Raining” and “Fairing”. It’s rejecting a lot of legitimate words.
I got another puzzle with duplicate letters, so only 8 unique letters. Is that supposed to happen? I wonder if the player could be given a choice of how many letters they want to play with?
Thanks again,
Dave

NO PROBLEM

I have no problem playing with VoiceOver off. I like it. It works fine for me.

Hello

When touch typing and voice over is off start to build a word and then
move your finger to the bottom of the screen, you should hear submit and your current word.

All of the main functions are mapped in this mode.

The puzzles are built from a 9 letter word which reads from top left to bottom left and then middle top to middle bottom and right top to right bottom.

This method is under review.

A update this week should fix a lot of this including the dictionary file.
Which has been occupying most of my time to get it right.

Different scores for different dictionaries?

By Michela Botti

Hi, thank you for the last update, and for bringing Italian dictionary into Wordfinder game!
I like the fact that I can choose to play in different languages, and it would be great to see how the score changes when changing language. Is it possible to add partial (per-language) scores?

Thank you for this really nice game!
Cheers

Forgot to say I love the swedish dictionary. I can even use custom puzzles on it wich is awesome.
I am currently on a puzzle on over 2000 words and I love having lots to do. I never get tired of it. Really glad that you found a good swedish dictionary. I will be traveling and this game will come with me where I go. Hmm, to think about it, I just wrote the word resa wich means travel. lol

oh lol and one other thing.

By Sabrina

4 years 9 months ago

I remember starting out playing and I felt I was going nowhere because I thought I could only use one letter once. I prefer not to have two of the same letters in my puzzles because it is a pain in the (somewhere nasty) to keep track of that. lol

I am glad you like the game.

An option to create puzzles with answers that only have one occurrence of a letter could be
added to a future update.
Thank you.
