Another Apple Books question

By Shaquana Flame, 25 May, 2023

iOS and iPadOS

A quick question about Apple Books and iOS 16. It is a much less user-friendly experience now. Just a minor thing, but previously whilst you were reading, you could tap in the right spot or flick through, and it would tell you how many pages were left in your chapter. it doesn’t seem to do that now. Is that correct? If you had to do something or go out, or just weren’t sure how much, you could have a look at how many pages were left and decide whether you were just going to finish this chapter or whether you had better put your book down and go and do something. because we’ve all done that: I am going to do the dishes, I’m just gonna finish this chapter.

Still there, but apparently not accessible

I have some vision. Using an iPad Pro, if I turn off Voice Over and tap the middle of the screen, the number of pages left flashes quickly at the top; the book title is briefly replaced by, for instance, "16 pages left in chapter." But when I turn Voice Over back on, I can't figure out how to make it say that no matter how I cycle through items. But I'm limited physically somewhat in the amount of gestures I can do, so might be missing something. But it doesn't seem to be accessible.

I can’t believe it

I just can’t believe how an app as seamless and user-friendly as Apple books has just been broken so badly.

I think I got it to work

Disclosure: I did this by using Voice Control commands, and also tried it with the Accessibility Shortcut. (I use both of these things to toggle Voiceover on and off.)

When I went back into Books this morning and it opened my current book automatically, the first thing I heard was the number of pages left in the chapter. So I poked and spoke around a little. I think you have to toggle Voiceover off and then back on again. Every time I do that, the focus goes to the title of the book and somehow switches it to the number of pages left in the chapter. Why it can't do that when Voiceover is already on for a while I don't know, but this work around seems to do the trick.
