can't find delete button in native mail app for ios

When in a mail message, I don't see the delete button like I used to on my old phone so I'm having to back out of the thread and swipe down to delete. I remember a while back I was able to configure the mail app so that the delete button would appear at the bottom of the screen but I can't remember how to do this. I have an iPhone 14 pro running iOS 16.1. Thanks.

One thing to try is to make sure your "Deleted mailbox" setting is set to "Trash" and the "move discarded messages to" setting is set to "Deleted mailbox" instead of "Archive mailbox," which may be the default for some email accounts in the native Mail app. These settings can be found in Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your account] > Account > advanced.
