Checklists in Notes is too verbose

I'm on iOS 16.3.1. I keep a checklist in the Notes app of items to pack when I travel. I clear all the checkmarks, and check items off as I pack them.

After a recent upgrade, possibly to iOS 16, not sure, the checklist items have become much more verbose. For example, with rotor set to Lines, I flick down to the next item, and I hear the following:

List item checklist, incomplete, space, checklist button, incomplete, toothpaste

It seems like a lot of words just to find out I haven't packed my tube of Colgate yet. All I really need to hear is either checked or unchecked, followed by toothpaste.

It never used to be this verbose. Does anyone know how to lower the VoiceOver verbosity when reading checklist items?

Thanks.
