Kindle footnotes on iOS

I'm reading a book on Kindle for iOS that contains numbers in the text that are links to specific points in the References section of the book. When I activate a link, which Kindle calls footnotes, there's no problem. It's getting back to where I was that gives me trouble. There's no toolbar or anything else on the screen that Voiceover can detect for me to use to return to my place in the main text. Double tapping somewhere on the screen to activate the menu is iffy because there are links all over the place at this point that I can activate without meaning to that will launch my browser to go to whatever URL the hyperlink references. Does anyone have any experience working with footnotes in Kindle for iOS who can shed some light on how to navigate back to my place without me having to find out the page number before I activate the footnote?
