Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows of an app similar to money reader that can identify coins in different currencies? I know coins are often different shapes, sizes weights etc. But these can take a while to get used to, and I was thinking an app to identify coins would be useful, particularly when going abroad out of your home country. Perhaps this could be a good extension for money reader. What do people think?

I just came across this post researching this topic, I wrote something that may help you.
Identifying coins is not as simple as identifying currency. I put together a blog post which explains the situation and some of the research behind it, you can find it at:

I hope this helps some.

The new one is hard to tell between it and five cents. I miss the big and nice one. I tend to ask people. having an app be better.

Huh? The 25 cent piece for me is still bigger than the nickle. And the edges are still rough.

Well, the one from 80s and 90s were bigger.

They still look the same to me actually. I was burn at around that time so I can still tell the difference.

The nickle is thicker. Plus if you drop them on a surface, they have a different sound. Quarter, has rouch ridges like that of a dime, the nickel has a slightly fatter edge then a penny all of which coin will make a different sound. sorry if this is confusing, not awake yet.

Go get your coffee. There was a big difference between old and new 25 C. No matter what she says. Keep warm and enjoy it.

I’m able to tell the same way as Siobhan. They each have distinct weight and sound. The easiest is knowing nickel and penny are smooth. Penny is smaller and thinner. Quarter and dime have ridges. Dime being the smaller and thinner of the two. A quarter also has a very noticeable weight to it.

I remember actually learning about that when I was young. I had to as an assignment listen to change beeing dropped and identify all of them. I'm not sure i can do it now, maybe with repractice but yeah you are right.

Yep, penny and nickel are smooth and thin, dime is rough and thin as a penny and to my mind a bit lighter than the penny, the quarter is the heaviest (not sure about 50 cent piece) and rough and bigger than the other 3. In fact I would use the quarter to tell the difference between eh other coins. When I was younger and it worked good. I still do that today.

I was able to know what was what in the coin department just by it side. I never pay attemtion about this and that. I was sighted and when I lost my sight did remember side and it was easy. Now not much. I could tell just by having them in my hands what was.
