question about the google mail app

Hello,
Regarding the google mail app does it download all of your messages on your phone? or does it just save them on the server?
I have emails on my gmail from when I've opened the account in 2007 and don't want those taking up space on my phone.

I don't think it downloads emails on the phone. not sure though.
