Hi all.
In case it matters, I'm running the latest version of iOS 18 on an iPhone XR.
We're going to an air show tomorrow. In case I want to record anything just for fun, is there an app that will handle the loudness automatically for me? Either something that will figure out the levels, or something that does 32-bit float? I know, get one of the accessible Zoom recorders, but you know, I didn't and there's no time now. Plus it would just be something extra to drag along.
I figure I'll have my phone with me already. Plus if it can record right from the lock screen. So I'm told, it will be really loud, I've never been to one. So I'm looking for something I can just start and not have to mess around with.
It's entirely likely that the phone's microphones just aren't equipped to deal with that kind of noise volume so it doesn't even matter if such a thing exists, feel free to let me know if that's the case and I shouldn't even bother. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they're just not built for that kind of thing, so they'll just be overwhelmed and distort. But I figure it can't hurt to ask, at least.

Yeah I'd suggest a zoom recorder
I'm not sure if phone's microphones can handle that type of spl. Granted if you’re at a good distance, say, 5 meters out? You should be good, although mind the wind, 32bit float or not; that'll mess up your recording up fast.
As far as if there’s an app that records in 32bit float? Honestly? Not that I know of, your best bet would be to get a interface or a zoom recorder that can do 32bit, and using that.
Ferite recording studio could work, however using the phone's mikes, I mean it’s worth a shot, if nothing else.
As a tip, if you want to get a solid sound with iphone mikes... Try recording at the side of aircraft, not in front or behind, if you can help it. Ok you can do in front, i.e, standing facing say, the prop, as the wind gets pushed backwards; but point the mike at an angle, if you select something like a shotgun pattern.
But yeah, zoom is your best bet, tbh.

I myself recorded a airshow a few months ago with zoom h4e connected to stereo mike at8022, and it, was a lot of fun for sure.
