Siri Speech Output Assignment

I have a wired headphone connected to my iPhone, and voiceover is speaking through the headphones, as expected. But, siri is using the iPhone speaker. Siri used to follow voiceover to the headphones, but seems stuck on speaker now. How to set her free? Any ideas?

This is a common issue that can happen after iOS updates or changes in accessibility settings. Siri and VoiceOver use different audio routing logic, so sometimes Siri defaults to the device speaker even when VoiceOver is on headphones.

1. Go to Settings β†’ Accessibility β†’ VoiceOver β†’ Audio.
Look for Audio Routing or Output options.
(On newer iOS versions, Siri follows the system audio routing, but VoiceOver has its own settings.)
Make sure Default or Headphones is selected.

2. Turn VoiceOver OFF (Settings β†’ Accessibility β†’ VoiceOver).
Restart your iPhone.
Turn VoiceOver ON again.
Test Siri with headphones connected.

3. Go to Settings β†’ Siri & Search β†’ Siri Responses.
Ensure Prefer Spoken Responses is enabled.
If there’s an option for Always Speak Responses, toggle it and test.

4. Unplug your wired headphones.
Plug them back in and confirm they’re recognized (play some audio).
Invoke Siri again.

5. Go to Settings β†’ Accessibility β†’ VoiceOver β†’ Rotor.
Add Audio Destination to the rotor.
While VoiceOver is active, use the rotor to set Headphones as the destination.

If none of these work, it might be an iOS bug. In that case:

Update iOS to the latest version.
Or Reset Accessibility Settings (Settings β†’ General β†’ Transfer or Reset iPhone β†’ Reset β†’ Reset Accessibility Settings).
