Tips on How to Communicate Accessibility Issues to App Developers

By Tina, 30 July, 2015

Do any of you have tips, ideas or templates you can share with me as I try to communicate with app developers regarding accessibility issues? Like most of us, I don't know the language of the app developer, but if I download some app and I see a problem, I need to report it to them. I have one app that has a weird layout, and I have another that just needs to get an update to improve Voice-over support. I want to advise these people, but I want to know what to do short of taking a course in app development. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Just explain some of the problems you are experiencing in plain English, this has worked for me in some cases. It's also important to send them to resources on how to make their applications accessible. Here are some, listed right on AppleVis.

Hello,

As the above post suggested, use plain English. Unless you know the technical jargon, it’s best to be simple. Explain to them you are using VO and how for the most part it works. Then explain what problem you ran into and how to replicate the problem.

Be patient as most developers have no clue what VO is. You can tell them they can start VO by using Siri command “Turn on Voice Over.” Then have them do a four finger double tap to learn VO basics.

Lastly, you can create a thread here in applevis about your issue and send the link to the developer.

HTH and good luck.
