YouTube like/dislike buttons vanishing

By Luke, 21 April, 2022

iOS and iPadOS

Hi, usual disclaimer that I'm running the latest versions of iOS and the YouTube app, iPhone SE 2020 version.

As of the most recent YouTube app update, I frequently cannot access the like and dislike buttons below videos. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and this seemed to fix it for that session, but returning to the app an hour later, those buttons were gone again.

Anyone else running into this? I can't smash that like button if there's no like button to smash. lol

That only happened to me once.
I have the latest ios update and youtube version.

I’ve just noticed this as well.

I’ve just noticed this issue as well. Have they taken away the share like and dislike buttons or are they just not accessible to VoiceOver?

@Craig, Not sure

Hi Craig,

My guess is the buttons are still there and just aren't being detected by VoiceOver, but I haven't had a sighted person look at my screen to confirm that. I'd think the general public would be up in arms if those buttons had truly disappeared for everyone.

Also, while I'd say these buttons are missing on most videos I watch, I've come across some videos where they both appear and some where only the dislike button appears. It's very strange.

Invisible buttons

The buttons are there, but voiceover can't see them. I have no vision to verify this, but I was able to turn VoiceOver off and tap the share button, then reload voiceover. It worked, but your mileage will definitely vary.

Strange workaround

At the very top of the page, where the name of the video is announced followed by the word heading, double tap on it. I have no clue why, but somehow this seems to do the trick, bringing back those buttons for VoiceOver. The downside to this however, is the fact that when you do this, the collapse video button will disappear for some reason. Double tapping on that heading again will bring back the collapse video button as well. Crazy stuff I know, but that's at least how it works on my end.

Explore By Touch

If I use explore by touch I can find the buttons on every video. Sometimes flicking left and right a few times will make them show up as well. Explore by touch is the most consistent way I've found to make the buttons show.

Flick up on video title and use the more menu.

Hey, as above. It sucks that the buttons often aren’t available but if you collapse the video you can flick up on its title, tap more and share is in there.

That's true but

The like and dislike buttons will still be gone. Another thing you can do is to collapse the video and enter it again. In some cases, those buttons will reappear.

it disappear randomly
