Annoying message about "screen reader mode" on Safari

I've begun getting a repeating, and exceedingly annoying, message on some Websites on Safari. VoiceOver says something like, "Press alt+1 to use screen reader mode; stop this message with alt+0." But, I'm using a Mac, and of course have no "alt" key. I've tried option, command, control, various combinations, to no avail.
Anyone know how to stop this? It's making me crazy!
Thanks.

This sounds like something specific to the web pages you are visiting. You might try option+0 as the option key on the Mac is the same as the Alt key in Windows.

Just now went to one of the offending pages and did what you suggested -- and it took care of the problem. (Thought I'd tried that previously, but apparently not.) Thanks so much!

This happens on Windows as well. It is essentially a way to patch a website to work better with assistive technologies instead of updating the code to meet or exceed accessibility guidelines. It definitely can be more of an annoyance when that message is constantly read by a screen reader. I find it more distracting than helpful when I encounter it on certain web pages. I'm glad you found a solution to get the message to stop reading though.
