I wonder if anyone else is seeing this type of behavior in MacOS Catalina.
I can pretty consistently reproduce a system crash and reboot if I have the Messages app open and put my computer into sleep mode. When I try to wake the computer later, the system reboots, and after I log in, the system sends an error report to Apple. The issue also occurs if the computer puts itself to sleep after the sleep timeout preference setting. I don't have to manually put the system to sleep in order to reproduce the issue.
Note that if the Messages app isn't open, I can sleep and wake the computer without crashing, and this behavior is very consistent. I've only seen the crash when the Messages app is open at the time the computer sleeps.
Does anyone know of another workaround? Thanks.
System info: It's an old mid-2012 MacBook Pro but is up to date with current software.

no problems here
I've tried this several times on my 2018 MacBook Air, and have been able to put the computer to sleep and wake it up without incident.
Have you tried clearing your caches, checking your disk, and other common maintenance tasks? Sometimes those can help resolve crashes and other assorted system issues.
Possible fix
As I mentioned in the MacOS 10.15.4 blog post comments, after upgrading to 10.15.4, the crashes increased irrespective of the Messages app, but went away completely after I cleared the NVRAM.
