Disable Automatic Marking as read of Messages on Focus in Mail

Hi,
In using the mail app on Mac, the client seems to mark a message as read as soon as I move to the new message. How can I change this behavior so it remains unread?
I remember this being an issue on a platform years and years ago, but I honestly don't recall if it was an iOS thing or if it was Thunderbird.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

To disable automatic marking of emails in Mail as read, focus on and interact with the vertical splitter to the right of the messages table, and press VO-Right-Arrow until it is collapsed to 100%, meaning that no message previews will be displayed in the Mail window.
