Yes, espeak works on the latest version of mac osx. However, it is still commandline driven. You can't use it with voiceover yet. Tyler Spivey was working on Espeak for mac for a time, not sure how that's going. Strangely, eloquence started working again on High Sierra. But haven't heard much about the process of turning espeak into a speech synthesizer accepted as a system-wide engine.

i wouldn't want it to use it as an voicover voice, only for the say coomand, to say things. will it work for that?

I wonder if this is actually available only for TDSR, the screen reader that Tyler Spivey is working on. In any case, I will have to check this out at some point. I think I'm one of the few who likes eSpeak and Eloquence. But I'm also comfortable with VoiceOver and the voices currently available for it.

I recommend installing it with homebrew, since installing manually is tricky and the homebrew version works well.

when you say installing it with homebrew, is that what how its done in the page i put in the post at the top?

Yes, it is, but for some reason it leaves out an important step that you need to do before Homebrew will install. You have to enter the command:

xcode-select --install

in the terminal and then accept the lisence agreement. That will install the command line parts of Apple's xcode, which is needed for Homebrew.

Put it before, since that Ruby line installs Homebrew. That install will fail if you don't have Homebrew cli tools available, unless they've changed it in the last six months or so.

I cannot compile espeak under Mac OS 13.6. I get the following error when trying to do so.
event.cpp:413,16:error: use of undeclared identifier 'sem_time_dwait''

Anyone know how to fix?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

May I ask how do you run eloquence with voiceonver on mac?

By Justin on Thursday, March 14, 2019 - 16:01

If you want to run Eloquence on macOS, there used to be something dealing with a wine wrapper, and there was an eloquence utility somewhere on the internet. I forget how to run it but I've tried it a few years ago and wasn't satisfied, so got rid of it and am running Assistivewear's infovox iVox voices, and they run very well. They aren't free, you have to purchase activation credits, which will allow you to unlock voices.
However, for what they are, they sound great and do work very well. Sorry if i can't help you on eSpeak or eloquence, I just don't see the point of trying to run them on MacOS.

Well @jack said it is working and really I thought that it was not possible at all to run iit. But I am curious and I would try it.
