Hi everyone,
I’ve been using a microfiber cloth to clean my display. Sometimes, I dampen it for better cleaning, but it seems like I’m not doing a great job with it—there are still visible smudges and fingerprints when I have someone or “Be My Eyes” check it.
What tools do you use to clean your display? Any tips or advice you can share?
Thank you!

Cleaning tips
Disclaimer: This can be used on pretty much any electronic with a screen. Be it your smart phone, smart watch, tablet, etc, etc.
I have a couple of choices I use for screen leaning. When i want to do a quick and dirty job – no pun intended – I use alcohol wipes. Not the small square pads you would find in the pharmacy section of your local grocer, but I have a canister of alcohol wipes, roughly about the size of a disinfecting wipe, and these make for a fast means of wiping down a screen.
When i want to do a more thorough job, I use a microfiber cloth and either distilled water, or 90+ proof rubbing alcohol.
Things of note.
1. 90 proof or better is safer for electronics.
2. Distilled water is non-conductive, so also safe for electronics.
HTH. :)
Screen Protector
A friend has got a screen protector for his MBA with some sort of anti reflection and smudge coating from Amazon and he swears by it.
@Maldalain
People say that using a screen protector or key cover could damage the screen or the MacBook body over time since the lid may not close fully. I would like to use a screen protector, but I’m not sure how safe it is.
@Brian
I have some idea of what I could use to properly clean the screen, but what I struggle with is the application part of the cleaning as someone who is totally blind.
I understand
My best advice can be summed up in 2 words; diligence and patience. First and foremost, take your time with it. Don't just give the screen a once over and hope for the best. Rather, take your time and work your way slowly and methodically across the entirety of the screen you are cleaning.
It may seem tedious, but much like cleaning a home, – we – have to take our time if we wanna do it correctly. :)
One more tidbit
Do not rely on AI such as BME to tell you if your screen is dirty. It can and will hallucinate, especially when it comes to reflections.
I was...
Well, I was relying on AI for feedback on my cleaning... Maybe I care too much...
There is absolutely nothing…
There is absolutely nothing wrong with caring for your technology. I'm simply saying that AI will never give you a proper answer on a screen, because any amount of reflection or shadow or a fingerprint or anything can, and most often times will, cause it to hallucinate.
Here's a great example for you, I was once told my laptop had a dark smudge in the middle of the screen, only to find out that it was a reflective shadow of my head, as I had a light behind me, and the screen was off at the time.
So, use AI if you must, I'm just telling you do not depend on it for certain tasks.
