unable to update my IPhone using itunes

I have been having issues updating my IPhone via itunes with windows10. I get an error code 4000 an unknown error has occured. I go through the troubleshooting steps the error provides such as restarting both devices, making sure itunes plus ms updates are both up to date, trying a different cable as well. The part it gets stuck on is it goes through the extracting files but then it goes to backing up IPhone, and then get the error 4000 code an unknown error has occured. When I do just a regular backup without updating the backing up goes fine but when I want to update my software with itunes is when it won't let me. I'm at a loss. It has happened with previous updates as well. When I update over the air everything is fine.
Any suggestions or any other ideas?
Thanks
