News and Updates for August 2012

Hello from the Team at AppleVis.

Here's our quick round-up of some recent news from the AppleVis website:

AppleVis Editorial Team Pick of the Month

Each month the AppleVis Editorial Team sit down at our virtual conference table and decide which of the apps submitted to the site during that month should be our monthly pick ... and boy, was it a tough decision this month!

Lots of great apps were featured on AppleVis in July, and a number of those stimulated a lot of discussion, some of which was quite heated.

We tried hard not to be predictable with our choice, but we ultimately had to accept that Fleksy was without doubt the most significant app to hit the site in July. Although its functionality, usefulness, potential and pricing were all subjects of much debate, there is no getting away from the fact that it brought something totally new to the iOS platform and that many of you absolutely love it.

So, accepting that we are predictable and that some of you will be saying that you've already heard more than enough about this app, we are still pleased to announce that Fleksy - Happy Typing is our pick of the month for July.

Our blog post gives a little more information about our choice, gives an honorable mention to TextDetective, and lists a few other iOS apps that have impressed us over the past month:

We hope that our decision will be just as difficult next month, so make sure to share all the new and interesting apps that you find during your travels through the iOS and Mac App Stores. Remember, each new app directory entry, podcast or guide that you post to AppleVis increases your chances of winning our monthly iTunes gift card giveaway. This month's winner was Cathy from Virginia. Congratulations to you, and we hope that you have fun spending your $20.

New Campaign of the Month

The CNN App for iPhone has now become the latest app to feature in our Campaign of the Month. This app has been very accessible in the past, but a recent update has introduced significant issues for both VoiceOver and Braille users.

Considering CNN's position as one of the leading global news sources, and the fact that people from around the world will be looking to them for coverage of the forthcoming US Presidential election, we're hoping that you will all support our campaign and lobby CNN to address these issues as a matter of some urgency.

If you've taken part in any of our past campaigns, you will know that it only takes a few moments and a handful of mouse clicks.

Clicking on the link below will take you to a form that will send your message direct to CNN. We've already pre-filled this with a sample message. If you are happy with this, just submit the form:

We were thrilled by the number of people who supported our last campaign and lobbied Facebook to meet their publicly stated commitment to providing a great experience for everyone by making their iOS app accessible to blind and low vision users. The form for supporting this campaign is still available, so please take a moment to do so if you haven't already:

As always, thank you to everybody who supports our campaigns.

Join us on Zello tonight

A quick reminder that we are hosting another Q&A session tonight (9 August) at 9.00PM EST.

This is a great opportunity to meet with other members of the community and some of our Editorial Team. There's no specific topic this month, so just come along with any questions that you have about using your iDevice or Mac.

If you aren't familiar with Zello, it's a live chat service that allows you to engage in real-time conversations with other users. AnonyMouse has just today posted an updated podcast on the Zello app for iOS:

The AppleVis iOS App Hall of Fame

Last month's vote for induction into our App Hall of Fame was the closest ever, with just a single vote separating the eventual winner, Vokul, from its two closest challengers.

Although it is still early, it looks like this month's vote could be just as close, meaning that each and every vote could count. So, do please remember to cast your vote. It might be the one that makes the difference!

Remember, when you are logged in to the AppleVis website, you can cast your vote right from the home page. Simply navigate to 'The AppleVis iOS App Hall of Fame' heading, and make your choice from the selection box that you will find below this.

In Closing

As always, our thanks go to everybody who helps to make AppleVis the wonderful resource that it is. We appreciate each and every post that you make to the site.
