Introduction
For decades, my experience with refreshable braille has been shaped by a single line of text. I've made it work, but it has also required a constant rhythm of panning, repositioning my hands, and mentally reconstructing the surrounding context. Sitting down with a multi-line display for the first time felt like a shift in how I interacted with information. The additional space immediately made the structure of a document more apparent. Paragraph breaks and indentation stood out naturally beneath my fingers, making it easier to understand how a document was organized at a glance. Reading also became more fluid since I could spend more time focused on the content itself instead of advancing the display every few seconds. One can, of course, configure automatic scrolling, but that introduces a different challenge. I found myself reading to the rhythm of the device instead of at my own pace, leaving little opportunity to pause and process what I had just read before the next line appeared. Tables and other structured information were finally something I could explore spatially rather than line by line, opening a richer understanding of how data relates across rows and columns. Even something as simple as rereading the previous sentence or checking a point from a few lines earlier was enhanced because the surrounding text remained available without losing my place. As someone who relies on braille as my primary reading medium, these seemingly small changes added up to a noticeably more productive and enjoyable reading experience. Though the Dot Pad X does support MacOS with VoiceOver, along with JAWS and NVDA screen readers on Windows, I primarily use it with my iPhone and do not use a Mac. My main interest at this time is text consumption. As such, this review will focus on iOS and mostly discuss reading text. All testing was conducted using iOS 26.6 on my iPhone 16 Pro. A big thank you goes out to the AT Guys for providing me with the device to conduct my honest review.
Description
The Dot Pad X is a 300-cell display for tactile graphics that is also capable of showing 8 lines of text, with 20 cells in each line. The Dot Pad X does contain 300 cells, but they are designed to be able to fit very closely together for the purposes of tactile graphics. It also has a 20-cell single-line display at the bottom. The Dot Pad is primarily intended as a consumption device. It does not have a direct way to input text. Though the display is capable of 8 lines of output, it can be used as a 10-line display in 6-dot mode for reading books. See details on the Dot Book application below. Both tactile graphics and text output are supported under iOS 18 and above, with only the 20-cell panel braille output available in iOS 15 through iOS 17. The Dot Pad X is roughly the size of an iPad Pro. It measures approximately 9 by 11 inches and weighs about 2.5 pounds. Battery life is typically around 8 hours, which is one of the improvements made through a firmware update. I tried the original Dot Pad in 2024, but found that the cells were not sharp enough and that they did not refresh reliably. These issues have been resolved for me with the release of the Dot Pad X. When you place the Dot Pad X in front of you, the device is set at a slight incline, with the back raised slightly to create a more natural reading position. The closest thing to you is the 20-cell panel. Behind this, there are 6 buttons. The far left and right buttons are triangular-shaped and are called the panning keys. The other 4 are oval-shaped and are referred to as f1 through f4. The triangular buttons pan the 20-cell panel and when pressed together, communicate the battery level of the Dot Pad. With the 4 oval-shaped buttons, f1 and f4 have a raised bump. These 2 buttons pan the tactile display, which is located above the 6 buttons. The left oval-shaped button without a dot (f2) takes the user to their Home Screen by default, while the right button without a dot (f3) activates an item. Covering the tactile display surface is a thin, flexible sheet referred to as a βcell protector,β designed to prevent dust, dirt, moisture, and other substances from entering the cells. Dot includes 3 sets of these along with the one attached to the Dot Pad when purchased. The 20-cell display is intended to be used for content such as image labels, descriptions, or additional information from connected devices. On iOS, the 20-cell panel at the bottom shows the first 20 cells of the item on which VoiceOver focus is set. The tactile display can be used to display text or tactile graphics. On the top face, toward the right-hand side, there is a braille letter βPβ marking the power switch. The power switch and USB-C port are located on the right edge. On the left edge, there is a second USB-C port, marked with a braille letter βD,β which is used for data connections such as linking to a computer. It is nice that these 2 are separate, so that you are not automatically charging the Dot Pad each time it is plugged into an external device. Having a single port for charging and data often causes significant battery drain from a connected laptop.
What's in the box?
When it arrived, the Dot Pad X box contained the Dot Pad itself, a protective shell which goes around the outside of the Dot Pad X, 3 cell protector membranes for both the larger area of the device as well as the 20-cell panel at the bottom, a screwdriver for replacing the cell protectors, 10 extra screws, a carrying bag, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a power supply. The carrying bag is a very nice design with 3 pockets. The main pocket easily stores the Dot Pad X and can also accommodate a tablet or small laptop. There are also 2 smaller pockets on the front for things like USB cables or mobile phones. It also comes with a heavy-duty and adjustable shoulder strap for transport.
First start and getting connected
When the power switch is set toward the back of the device, it is on. The Dot Pad will vibrate and then you will encounter the last 3 characters of the Dot Pad's model number. They will appear on the 20-cell panel along with the larger area in printed letters. The Dot Pad X appears to only support Bluetooth connections on iOS and MacOS. this prevented me from doing any testing with the Dot Pad as I'm DeafBlind and could not understand the TTS at the Apple Store I visited. Thus, I was not able to evaluate it. This is because without vision or hearing, it is not possible to pair a Bluetooth device to the Mac. For iOS, I was able to pair it by going to Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Braille and selecting the Dot Pad from the list of choices. With iOS, since I already had a braille display connected, the lack of USB support wasn't much of an issue, but for DeafBlind users, this is something to be aware of. Once connected, by default, the Dot Pad will display images when available on the large tactile display, but otherwise will display up to 8 lines of text. When I navigated to my Home Screen, for example, the name of the app in focus is displayed on the 20-cell panel, while the icon for the app is shown on the large panel. Once connected to my iPhone, I found it interesting, for example, to learn what the icons on my Home Screen felt like. It even gave details such as the fact that I had new text messages, which changes the shape of the icon slightly. The user can control whether the display always shows graphical output, only text, only images, or content in a preview mode. The user will need to add an option to the VoiceOver Rotor that is only available when a multi-line braille device supported by VoiceOver is connected. To add this item to your rotor, go to Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Rotor>Rotor Items. The option to adjust the aforementioned setting is called Braille Text Mode. There are also rotor options for adjusting braille line thickness, zooming, inverting, and panning the image vertically or horizontally. Covering details of each option is beyond the scope of this review, but if the graphical output interests you, these are other options available for adjusting your "view" of an image.
Driving the Dot Pad X
Since there are only a few buttons on the Dot Pad X, I have found that it is best to use this device in conjunction with whatever you would normally use for navigation. Whether that means using the touchscreen, a Bluetooth keyboard, or another method, these are still fully available when using the Dot Pad X on iOS. I personally have used my already connected NLS eReader. For a more portable setup, I have had success using the Orbit Writer. It is also possible to remap what the buttons do on the Dot Pad, and one can also use combinations of 2 buttons to perform VoiceOver functions. To configure these, you can head to Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Braille>the name of your Device>More Info>Braille Commands. There are a lot of different options available, and what may work best for me may not work for someone else. I did find that pressing 2 buttons together while connected to VoiceOver did not seem reliable at first, but this was mostly resolved by changing the Ignore Chord Duration setting found in SettingsAccessibility>VoiceOver>Braille>Ignore chord Duration. It seems like 0.25 seconds is what works best in my case.
Consuming text with VoiceOver
I found reading with the Kindle for iOS application to be more enjoyable than the other options I tested. Like all applications, it is necessary to navigate to the book you have chosen. With Kindle, once the book is open, reading continuously is done with ease. Using the Bookshare Reader application to be successful; however, I still had to navigate through the book instead of having a continuous reading experience. I had a similar challenge with the Dolphin EasyReader application. I understand that a reader can play audio continuously using the Bookshare Reader, but did not find that this reliably rendered the entire book so that I could keep reading until the end with braille. Another option for Bookshare content, or many other text formats, is Vox Libri, which costs $4.99 at the time of writing. This has a specific braille mode, and I found that I could download an EPUB file from Bookshare and use the application's import feature to have a similar experience to Kindle. Currently, even though continuous reading is possible, the entire book is not available in the sense that you can't jump to headings that are below what is currently visible to VoiceOver. I was also able to consume the news with the NFB-Newsline app. Using the Dot Pad X to read articles was seamless. On the other hand, utilizing the Apple News app, was not so enjoyable. This is because certain advertisements appearing within articles cause VoiceOver focus to jump to the tabs at the bottom of the screen. Sadly, this also rudely yanks the reader away from the article using multi-line braille, something which is getting on my nerves to the point that I'm considering canceling my Apple News+ subscription. Reading Google Gemini's output works well. I had generated a rather lengthy transcript with it and was able to consume that transcript within the app. As for ChatGPT, the output was also fine for about two full eight-line screens worth, but the scroll bar would often get in the way and cut off my reading of longer outputs. Since VoiceOver doesn't reliably display announcements, a way that can speed up reading in braille, this was also not a fallback option. Speaking of transcripts, another use I have for multi-line braille is consuming captions, not to mention access to my large BRF book collection. Imagine my excitement to test the new Live Captions function found in iOS 26's Braille Access! Also imagine the ability to finally read BRF files with multi-line. Sadly, Braille Access doesn't support multi-line braille. My hope is that Apple will consider adding this support in the future, so that instead of using third-party applications for making phone calls, for example, I can easily follow a phone call with features built into iOS in a multi-line format.
The Dot Pad X beyond the screen reader
Speaking of BRF files, I have only been able to read them reliably with the Dot Book application. Not only does this app support displaying BRF files correctly, but it can show 10 lines of text at a time instead of the 8 that are found while connected through VoiceOver. It does require some setup. First, activate the Settings button in the top left corner of the main screen. There are settings that can be adjusted for audio and visual output, and there is a setting which controls the number of lines of output which will appear on the Dot Pad. This can be set as low as 6 or as high as 10. 6 lines allow for some room between each line, while 10 lines can make the braille feel a bit squished together. After launching the Dot Book, the user must either log in or sign in as a guest. Once done, it is time to upload some BRF content. From the Dot Book main screen, find the "More Options" button and activate it. Then, choose "Upload" and locate the desired BRF file. For my purposes, this meant browsing to my Dropbox application and then selecting the file. After uploading, there will be a confirmation that it was successful, and the book should show up on the file list. Before reading the book, it is necessary to forget the Bluetooth connection established by VoiceOver through the Dot Pad. This does mean that if you are a braille-only user without the ability to access speech, you will need to have another braille display connected. After disconnecting the Dot Pad X by going to Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Braille and activating the "more info" button for the Dot Pad, choose "forget this device" and it will disconnect. On your iOS device, select the book you have uploaded and then go to settings inside that book. Now, activate the "Connect" button and find the Dot Pad X you wish to pair. Once done, the Dot Pad should begin showing you braille according to the settings specified. Itβs a nice experience having 10 lines. My hope is that Dot will expand the list of import formats. There are other applications, such as Dot Canvas, that function without a screen reader. Dot Canvas is a free iOS application for creating, editing, saving, and sharing tactile graphics and braille content for display on the Dot Pad. Users can draw whatever they like, add shapes or braille text, import existing materials, and view their work on the Dot Pad in real time. The user interface is very similar to the Dot Book on startup. I am focusing on text here, but I felt it was worth mentioning for those who are interested in drawing or otherwise creating tactile graphics on iOS and iPadOS.
Games and other things
Dot Inc. has encouraged developers to take the SDK and create further applications and utilities for the Dot Pad X. The largest collection of these is available from the AT Guys. These Braille Games and Apps for Dot Pad consist of classic games including Connect 4, Chess, Blingo, Tetras, and several others. There are also utilities for testing the keys and dots and obtaining firmware information about the connected Dot Pad. There is also a calendar application. These apps and games are designed to take advantage of the text and graphical output of the Dot Pad. To connect on iOS, users will need to install a web browser which supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Safari and Edge, which I tried, don't appear to support this. The recommended browser is called Bluefy. Once Bluefy is installed, like with the Dot Book app, it is necessary to remove the Bluetooth pairing with VoiceOver. This is another situation where having a secondary device or being proficient with the touchscreen comes in handy. Users can head to braille.atguys.com and there will be a connect button available. There are options to connect to USB and Bluetooth, but I was unable to get my iOS device to connect through USB. Once connected, it's possible to navigate through the list of options on the Dot Pad itself. For more details on which buttons perform which functions, please see the help section of the hub. I chose to play a game of Blingo. This is a game where you get a random five-letter word and have 5 chances to guess it correctly. Guesses are typed in whatever way you type in a text field. After submitting your guess, there will be a series of tones which indicate what the Dot Pad will also show. A box means the letter is correct, a line under it means the letter is in the word but in the wrong place, and a letter with nothing under it means the letter is not in the word. What I found really nice about this setup is that I can easily read all of my guesses at once without having to navigate using VoiceOver. I also played a game of Battleship, and found it very handy to be able to explore the grid as I started filling spaces.
Updating
Updating the Dot Pad requires it to be connected over USB to either a Windows computer or a Mac. When doing this update, you must also disconnect the Dot Pad from any screen readers. I attempted to do the update a few times with a Mantis connected over Bluetooth, but did not have success. I turned the Mantis off and had only the Dot Pad connected, and the update worked. Whether that is a fluke in my system or a wider problem, I'm not able to tell.

Dot has a network of worldwide distributors. In the United States, it retails for $5,900 and can be purchased from the AT Guys.
Conclusion
The Dot Pad X has given me a more natural way to read braille on an iPhone while preserving some portability. Having several lines available at once preserves context, reduces constant panning, and allows the structure of a document to remain beneath my fingers. Long-form reading feels especially well suited to the display when an application renders content continuously. Some applications work beautifully, while others interrupt reading or expose only part of the available content. Switching between VoiceOver and web-based applications also requires repeatedly changing the Bluetooth connection, which may create a significant access barrier for braille-only users. Despite those limitations, the Dot Pad X demonstrates how much multi-line braille can improve access to digital information. Continued support from Apple and application developers could make the experience far more consistent. For someone who primarily consumes books, articles, transcripts, or other lengthy material in braille, the Dot Pad X offers a meaningful improvement over a single-line display while remaining portable in a package roughly the size of an iPad Pro. Currently, the Dot Pad X is the only device I have used which supports both text and graphical output on iOS. From a productivity standpoint, using multi-line braille, specifically the Dot Pad X with iOS, has allowed me to process text more meaningfully and with less stress.

Thanks for this great review. I wish there was a 40-cell version of DotPad X, 40 cells is still what I favor for long-form reading.
Anyways, on to my question: I am getting the impression from your article that iOS currently supports DotPad X more than the Monarch? Is this accurate?
