RiVO (Remote Interface to VoiceOver)

Posted on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 by mehgcap

What's a RiVO?

The RiVO (remote interface to Voiceover) is made by Mobience, a company in South Korea, but they ship world wide. The RiVO is a small device, about as wide and deep as a credit card and roughly 1/3 inches thick. It has a total of twenty buttons, and is meant to be a remote control of sorts to VoiceOver users and a keyboard/media controller for everyone, sighted users included. You can flick, change the rotor, scroll pages, read…

Posted on Friday, February 7, 2014 by Jackie Brown
If you are the sort of person who puts their iPhone down and can't locate it, or you live alone and would like something uncomplicated to use as an extra security measure, then consider HipKey.  Here's why! HipKey is a small gadget you can pair with your iPhone using Bluetooth that will emit an alarm if you become separated from your device.  Using the free HipKey app that you download from the App Store to your iPhone, you can configure HipKey to work within a specified radius…

iPad Air review

Posted on Thursday, January 30, 2014 by djflex90
So I picked up my iPad air a few days ago, and the first thing I noticed was how small the box was. I had the chance to play with an iPad 2 the day before, and the box with everything inside felt like it weighed about the same. So what did I find when I opened the box? Simple packaging thank goodness. I felt like a kid with a new toy and I didn't want to waste time with complicated packaging. Once I removed the plastic cover, the iPad in all of its shiny glory could be lifted from the box…

Review of Esys Braille displays

Posted on Sunday, January 19, 2014 by Maya Pureseva
Hello Applevis community! It’s my first review, so I apologize if there are any formatting issues or other inconsistencies. I’ve been browsing the Applevis website but didn’t find much information related to these Braille displays here or on the web, so maybe my experience will be somehow helpful for those who are picking a Braille display for their I-OS devices and would like to use their display as a standalone notetaker.

Introduction

Esys Braille displays are produced by the…

Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB Mobile Storage with Built-In Wi-Fi Streaming

Posted on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 by Jackie Brown

I am not alone in my dislike of Apple's iTunes, and recently came across a product that seemed to fit the bill for bypassing the software to play my music library on an iOS device.

The Seagate Wireless Access is a small external hard drive that allows you to copy music, videos, photos and documents between it and iOS or Androidusing the Seagate Media app. Furthermore, the Wireless Access runs on battery for up to 10 hours, and connects wirelessly to your network and Apple or Android…

BoxWave Keyboard Buddy Case For iPhone 5/5s

Posted on Sunday, January 12, 2014 by thebigt
The iphone fits nice and snuggly in to the Boxwave Buddy case so you don't have to worry about it sliding out. The keyboard keys feel nice under the fingers but theey are kind of small. You can feel the buttons well. The bad things are that the keyboard will double type meaning you have multiple letters. You have to type slowish to make sure that you won't have to correct lots of mistakes but it can still double type. If you are somewhere where it's hard to get signal the keyboard will…

The Powerful powerqube

Posted on Thursday, January 2, 2014 by Scott Davert
Introduction For the power user, which I consider myself to be, one of the challenges is keeping all of your devices charged and ready to use. As someone who owns an iPod, iPhone, Macbook Air, and who requires braille support, I demand a lot of power each day. A problem for me is that most power strips are huge in size, or they do not have enough outlets configured in the spacing which will allow me to charge many devices simultaneously. For example, a few different AC adapters. This was…

Logitech Z600 Bluetooth Desktop Speakers

Posted on Saturday, December 28, 2013 by blindgator
One of the many fun things about being blind is reading about a product and saying to myself, oh that sounds cool, and then thinking, well will I be able to work it. Yes, it’s great to have to think about that last part every time I buy something. I recently set out to buy a new pair of Bluetooth desktop speakers. I wasn’t sure if I wanted Bluetooth or Air Play speakers, all I knew is I wanted something that sounded great, and cost under $100. I settled on the Logitech Z600, and after using…

Bedphones: Headphones for Sleep

Posted on Saturday, November 9, 2013 by Amber
Bedphones are very flat, very thin earphones you clip to your ears. They are perfect if you want to sleep and listen to music without headphones falling off, hurting your ears, or without disturbing others in the same room. Imagine a flat metal disk, with standard headphone padding over it and very thin clips attached at the top. The clips are made of bendy wire that can conform to the shape and size of your ear. The bendy clip wire goes behind your ear and the headphone cord goes behind your…

The RAVPower 14000 MAH "External Battery Charger Pack": a lot of power for a little bit of money

Posted on Thursday, October 24, 2013 by Scott Davert
Introduction There are currently 2 models available of this pack, one which has a capacity of 8400 MAH which costs $32.99 and another which boasts a capacity of 14000 MAH which sells for $43.99. Both of these prices were found on Amazon the day this review was written. As I'm a heavy user of electronics, this means I'm also one that goes for the higher capacity batteries. Besides, for $11 more, I get nearly twice the amount of power. SO, of course, that means this review covers the higher…

Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker Review

Posted on Friday, October 4, 2013 by Trilobite27
As a totally blind person good sound is something that is incredibly important to me. Over the past couple of years I have spent a large amount of time and money on different speakers and headphones for my IPod touch 4th gen and I phone. As the title of this review hints, I will be reviewing my newly acquired Bose Soundlink Mini. Lets Get started. My first foray into the world of Bluetooth speakers was about a year ago when I came across the Logitech Mini Boom box. This was a tiny yet very…

Mobee technology magic bar

Posted on Thursday, September 19, 2013 by Elena Brescacin
The magic bar is an accessory needed to re-charge apple's magic trackpad and wireless keyboard without having the trouble to have always new batteries or the electric recharger with us; it recharges by a normal micro USB cable, full charge takes about 6 hours: this ensures you to have your apple wireless keyboard always 100% charge! The description of the accessory is quite simple: in the box, there is a small single cylinder that is the battery; this package includes just one battery, for one…

The Limeade 18000 MAH battery pack: a lot of power for the money

Posted on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 by Scott Davert
IntroductionThe Limeade line of products come in many different sizes to suit your needs. They have a few packs, ranging in size from the $25 5000 MAH battery pack to the $99 18000 MAH battery pack. You can look at all the different models to compare for yourself by searching Amazon for Limeade. This specific review only covers the 18 MAH version. The higher the number, the more it costs, but also the larger the device and more juice you get to power your devices.

Description

Perixx PERIBOARD-804i

Posted on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 by Jakob Rosin
Hello. Its my first review here, so don't be very annoyed if I break something hard. Anyway. I used to have apple wireless keyboard, wich is a great product, but as everything, it has its minuses. I carry mine most of the time in my laptop case. What happened, was that it used to turn itself on in there. Those who own this keyboard know, how easyli the button in one end presses and turns the keyboard on. So I found myself in the other end of the house, again with turned on keyboard and no…

Review and comparison of Aftershokz wired and wireless headphones

Posted on Sunday, June 30, 2013 by DurDevil
Aftershokz use Bone Conduction technology to deliver sound through your cheek bones and therefore leaves your ears uncovered for hearing traffic noises, transit announcements etc; sounds great for ensuring safety for blind and visually impaired navigating about outdoors I thought - I was also thinking that listening to audio books, podcasts or just using a screen reader could be possible whilst still being "In the room" unlike when using regular stereo headphones so could be useful for when…

Posted on Saturday, May 25, 2013 by Maya

The strap also fits with Otterbox deffender case. Unfortunately, the strap is made only for 30 Pin connector I-devices. The description from the website: Color: Black Material: Plastic + silicone + aluminium alloy Type: Apple 30Pin Gadgets Compatible Models: iPad / iPhone / iPad Features: The sturdy…

Braille Note Apex Review

Posted on Friday, April 26, 2013 by Aaron Linson
The mobile market has exploded within the past few years and has really changed the way blind people work and play. With a big enfises on iOS devices like the iPhone and the iPad, many people are wondering if dedicated devices for the blind are even relevant anymore. When I say dedicated devices I mean anything from GPS devices to note taking devices with braille displays attached. In this article I want to give you my opinion on why I still choose to use a dedicated device. Let me clarify…

Seidio BD4-PBYIPH4-GR Innocell Plus Power Case for Apple iPhone 4/4S

Posted on Saturday, April 20, 2013 by Doug
There seems no section on applevis for external batteries and the item is both, though the prime purpose is as a battery; the case is only to make both the Iphone and battery one compact unit. Warning: this message is longer than an east-bound grain train at harvest! The power pack I will be discussing for the IPhone 4S is also available for the IPhone 5. The model is I believe rather steeply priced at present at $71 Canadian. The unit I purchased is: seidio bd4-pbyiph4-gr innocell Decent…

nuu minikey for iPhone5

Posted on Monday, April 8, 2013 by alex wallis
This review is of the nuu minikey Bluetooth keyboard designed for the iPhone5. This keyboard is a model designed specifically for the iPhone5 because of its redesigned appearance, there is a model for iPhones pre iPhone5, and the two are very similar but do have differences which I will discuss in this review. The first thing to say about the iPhone5 model is that it is very similar in layout to the model for older phones, however some punctuation symbols have moved in particular one thing I…
