Posted on Tuesday 7 August 2012 by AppleVis

The CNN App for iPhone has traditionally been very accessible. However, a recent update has introduced significant issues for both VoiceOver and Braille users.

Considering CNN's position as one of the leading global news sources, and the fact that people from around the world will be looking to them for coverage of the forthcoming US Presidential election, we're hoping that you will all support our campaign and lobby CNN to address these issues as a matter of some urgency.

If you've taken part in any of our past campaigns, you will know that it only takes a few moments and a handful of mouse clicks.

ViA: Why Reinvent the Wheel?

Posted on Sunday 22 July 2012 by Michael Hansen

The Braille Institute recently released a new app, ViA (Visually Impaired Apps), that lists other apps developed specifically for people who are blind or visually impaired. Even before I finished reading the app's AppleVis entry (http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/education/braille-institute), I thought to myself, "Why are they reinventing the wheel?"

The blind community already has mailing lists, podcasts, and--of course--AppleVis. Do we really need an app to help us sort through other apps? In almost all circumstances, I think not.

My Desert Island App

Posted on Friday 20 July 2012 by Michael Hansen

We've all heard the familiar question before: You're stuck on a desert island. If you could bring one thing with you, what would it be--and why?

In recent years, my answer to such a question was simple: my cane. Without it, I'd be in big trouble. If given more choices, I would invariably include things like food and water...and my iPhone.

Oh, and speaking of that iPhone. If I had to choose only one app to have on my phone, what would I choose?

The answer, for me at least, is not an easy one. My iPhone is about practicality. I don't do any gaming, and I use my phone mainly to make my everyday life easier: I text, read e-mail, check Facebook and Twitter, keep updated on the weather, read the news...that kind of thing.
