Description of App
Mud Portal is a full-featured MUD client for iPhone β connect to any text-based multiplayer world with desktop-class power and screen-reader-first design.
ACCESSIBILITY FIRST
- VoiceOver: every control labeled; long text reads in order, title first; gag triggers silence spam for VoiceOver too
- Hardware keyboard: Up/Down recalls history; Ctrl+1-9 re-reads the last 1-9 lines aloud
- Tells MTTS-aware MUDs a screen reader is in use, so they can trim ASCII art and maps
CONNECT & PLAY
- Full Telnet, 16-/256-color ANSI, optional TLS and MCCP2 compression
- Multiple simultaneous sessions; reconnects automatically if the network blips
- GMCP support β vitals, room tracking, quest data
GAME SOUNDS (MSP)
- MUDs that support MUD Sound Protocol can play sound effects and music; you set the volume ceiling
- Off by default: nothing is downloaded or played until you turn it on in Settings
- HTTPS downloads only; plays WAV, MP3, M4A, AAC and CAF (not Ogg)
QUEST TRACKER
- For GMCP MUDs that send quest data: a live panel tracks your objective and up to three quests
AUTOCORRECT & PROTECTED WORDS
- Optional autocorrect and auto-capitalize for the command bar β both off by default
- A Protected Words list keeps invented names, places, and commands safe from correction
QUICK COMMAND GROUPS
- Named, colored groups, tap-to-open or always expanded; flip buttons alternate two commands
DISCOVER MUD DIRECTORY
- Browse a curated, live MUD directory β filter by genre or screen-reader-friendliness, add with a tap; a colored dot shows recent reachability
- Submit a MUD or report one inactive, in-app
LOCK SCREEN & DYNAMIC ISLAND (PRO)
- Live Activity: server, character, connect time, idle-timeout countdown, comm counts, combat indicator β disconnect right there, on-device only; you choose what it shows and its colors
- If iOS pauses the app in the background, the card says so plainly
BACKGROUND KEEP-ALIVE (PRO, OPTIONAL)
- Off by default β turn on in Settings to stay connected in the background
- Uses location only to keep the session active β never stored or sent; iOS shows its location indicator while it's on
SPLIT-SCREEN MAPS
- Servers using ANSI scroll regions get a pinned map above scrolling text, automatically
iCLOUD SYNC
- Optional Pro sync of servers, triggers, aliases, scripts, maps, and protected words via your private iCloud, off by default
AUTOMATION
- Powerful triggers β regex/text match to highlight, gag, rewrite, send, play sounds, or vibrate; optional send delay
- Aliases with $variables; toggleable Classes group triggers, aliases, scripts, and timers
- Built-in scripting β variables, loops, conditionals, functions, #wait/#if; plus #show, #clear, #math
- Combat tracking overlay; command suggestions
CONTROLS & LOGS
- D-pad (optional diagonals, either side), four editable macro buttons; landscape splits D-pad and quick commands
- Command history with prefix search; iPad/keyboard: Cmd/Option + 1-9 jumps to a session
- Session logs (ANSI color) saved to Files

Pretty nice, but it needs work.
Itβs a pretty nice mud client, however, I think it really needs some work. For example, This sounds for triggers, you canβt even hear them before you select the one you want. Also, the sounds are very few and far between unless you can add them from your Files app or whatever you use. Now that would be interesting, being able to use customizable sounds. One more thing I have noticedjust likethe one who posted this said, it does not announce your text as it comes in.
Contacted the developer about the VoiceOver queueing issue
Hello,
Yes, for sure, this app does have some caveats, but given it's only on version 1.2, it's justified. Definitely send feedback their way so it can hopefully be addressed.
I just did
I did send them feedback. I also mentioned possibility of adding ambient sounds. Cause I noticed that there are no mud clients so far with ambient sounds that we can place in certain areas such as forests, spaceships, landing pads, whatever else you use and whatever game you play.
Problem adding new mods
So when I search up a mind, it gives me a host and then the port, but in the app, I donβt see anywhere to put in the porch number. I tried doing it anyways, but whatever I did didnβt work if anyone has a way of adding new MUDS I would appreciate it if they would post something here.
Good news
Hello everyone,
So some good news. The developer is doing his best to improve VoiceOver support. Therefore, I'm editing my accessibility comments to reflect that.
Be sure to send accessibility suggestions his way. He states, and I quote: "Seriously, keep the feedback coming. People like you are exactly who I'm building this for."
In reply to Believer 316, Adding muds
Adding MUDS can be done by selecting the Add server or quick connect popup button. It's the first element on the screen. There are two buttons within it. The Add Server button will take you to a dialog, letting you enter the host, port, and edit tons of settings you will find useful. The Quick Connect button is just what it sounds like. You type in the host, the port, and connect.
Hi from the developer - here to listen
Hello everyone,
I'm Steve - I'm the developer behind Mud Portal, the iOS MUD client a few of you have been kind enough to try to write about. I made a account so I can be where the conversation actually is, instead of hearing about it secondhand *smile*.
A bit of honesty: Initially I didn't set out out build "an accessible app" as a checkbox - I built a MUD client I wanted to exist, and tried to make VoiceOver a natural fit. Hearing that it landed well means a lot, and the loss of MUD Rammer is a big part of why I wanted to get this right and keep it going.
I read feedback closely and note items such as incoming text not being read aloud, previewing trigger sounds, and wanting more (and custom) sounds have all been heard, and I am working on these for the next update. Again it's just me, so any feedback is taken seriously, hopefully I can improve what I have out there. Please keep it coming, including the stuff that's broken or annoying. I'd rather hear it bluntly than not at all, and I'm especially interested in what would make this a real daily driver for you.
I am adding a "Pro" version, adding some limits to some new features that I'm adding in, I don't foresee this hindering any MUD experience. The Pro Version is also VERY low cost, just looking to see if I can get assistance covering the developer fees each year. Always welcome to do the tip-jar.
Thanks for the warm feedback so far, and for being so generous with your time and testing. I'm around - fire away.

The update has been released But I already find one small issue
I have noticed that voiceover does not read the text from the beginning of a new line in the mud. I donβt know if this is possible, but is there a way to fix that? Because when I try to look at my surroundings, it starts reading in the middle of a word sometimes. Itβs usually already two lines or three lines down. I do appreciate you making the imported sounds. I also have another question, how many triggers and sounds can we import before we have to pay.
awesome
i just recently got a 17 pro max, so lost access to mud rammer, so may give this a shot once it can read incoming messages.also, any plans for a mac version? Mud clients on mac are very few!
July 1 - Mud Portal v1.2.1 coming soon.
Good afternoon,
Version 1.2.1 is awaiting approval as of July 1st.
I've adjusted so the iOS can be version 18 or above, it was set at version 26 so might have left some older phones and ipads out.
@Exodia - I've adjusted the voice over slightly in the new release let me know if that helps. I recommend the "Queue" setting, as the "Interrupt" is aggressive, not sure how I like it if anyone does like it please let me know and I'll make sure I keep it in there.
#2 You asked about how many triggers, if you have VoiceOver turned on, there is a slight but that bumps the standard 100 triggers for free to 200 triggers ... call it a bug or an allowed bug, it's staying *smile*. If you have the subscription (Super cheap per year) or the lifetime then I'm pretty sure it is unlimited, so add as you need them. It could make game play a little slower if you have that many, please let me know and I'll see if I can improve the app performance on handling them.
@Jimmy I do have plans for a Mac version it is currently in development, I am glad you asked. I come from the 90's when zMUD was all the rage. Shoot me an email [email protected] and I'll flag your email address so once it's done I'll reach out. I am working toward making like the iOS version, but of course there is so much room for other things.
Next iOS version is still in development.
v1.2.2 will be released in a 2-3 weeks. There was a request for Log Files. The Log files are saved, but they aren't viewable, that'll be fixed in the next release. I just started on that edit, but should have it done in a couple days. Any other requests that make it in that I can squeeze in before the 15th will get added too.
Thanks again to everyone for your support!
