Hi everyone. Recently my MyPassport external drive started taking a long time to be recognized by the system. I plug the drive into the port on the right side of my Mac, but it doesn't show up for quite awhile. I'm pretty sure the thing is still working since I hear it, and a couple weeks ago while at my parents' place I was able to play some music from my library. But the music kept skipping, so I immediately deleted some old backups from the drive. The trash took forever to empty, so I'm wondering what to do next. I've had this external drive since 2016, and at that time a tutor and I transferred my entire iTunes library to the drive since it was taking up a lot of space on my Mac. Any help greatly appreciated.

Maybe a dry failure?
Is your drive having a funny noise or something? Or, you can run W Dr. utilities. I mean W D Dr. utilities. You can run the diagnosis on that, and see if there’s any errors. If there is, maybe you need to get a new one? You guys can confirm this with me too. I have a western digital my book drive and I thought something was wrong with it, so I am running the full media scan right now. The last time I checked, it was 70% done. I basically ran the utility overnight. All the other test from my my book series drive says it’s past.
Also another thing that happens sometimes is when you Abruptly shut down the computer and boot it back up, it takes awhile to recognize the drive.
Re: Maybe a Dry Failure?
Thanks for your reply. I can't find the WD Drive Utilities; just WD Security. But as I'm deleting unnecessary stuff it seems things are improving just a bit. The drive didn't seem to take quite as long to come up earlier this morning. I left it plugged into my Mac overnight, but powered down last night when I was finished with it. The music is still skipping, but that has gotten slightly better. I'm wondering if this has something to do with buffering? My trash is still taking a rather long time to empty; both with the external drive in and with it disconnected.
