Late i know, but i’m finally joining the Mac club

macOS and Mac Apps

Hi all. Well, i finally ordered my first Mac book air today following the final decision that i’m done with windows computers! I’m really excited (slightly nervous) to get playing. So my most important question, since i’m.not buying it in store so can’t ask the staff, is it possible for someone like me with no usable vision to turn Voiceover on independently once it arrives? I own a bluetooth keyboard so i understand the lay-out of the keys compared with the windows keys. Thanks in advance, and wishing everyone who celebrates a very happy christmas and all the best for 2022.

Check that out in the AppleVis to learn about it if you did not use one ever. Luck with voiceover and the Mac.

Ah right, thanks for that. Is there any sort of audible feedback, vibration or something that indicates when the initial start-up is complete, or is it literally guesswork?

Setup Process

The setup process is fully accessible with VoiceOver and has been since Tiger in 2005. VoiceOver should offer you a tutorial which I highly recommend going through. It teaches the fundamentals of using the screen reader.

first boot

the first boot of your new Mac, turn it on and you'll hear the startup chime. it's different than it used to be. then, a voice comes on explaining about VoiceOver. this is the same introductory message that is presented post a clean install. anyway, after that message, press command-F5 and then start setup. since you're new to the Mac, I highly recommend the VoiceOver Getting Started Tutorial. the message I reference will invite you to do the tutorial before setup. it gives a good overview of VoiceOver.
congrats,
Daniel

Welcome to the club! I switched about a year ago and I can't see myself going back any time soon. What kind of MacBook Air did you buy? Did you get the new m1 model?

Hi!
It is very nice for your transmission from windows to mac.
But you will feel a lot of frustrations in working on mac.
Certainly, it is just my opinion.
But the first impression will be awaiting you expectedly fast.
I wanted to purchase any mac for developing apps.
But then I cancelled my decision.
I don't want to pay money for developing just for myself.
Or every time to sign an resign my apps for working on my iDevices.
And keyboard reaction is better on windows especially with NVDA and espeak/newfon/vocalizer synthesis.
And the accessibility is better on windows practically.
At least on windows 8.1 and windows 10.
Another time, It is just my opinion!
And I am glad for you sincerely.
Use your mac and tell us about your impressions!
Cheers!
