Wordle Game

As I understand it, the New York Times bought the Wordle files and the Wordle site is no longer playable. Instead, you have to go to Wordle - New York Times. This site is not accessible for playing Wordle. Are there any workarounds or do I just need to wait or advocate for the New York Times to make it accessible. I followed the directions on the recent AppleVis Wordle podcast but I think I was a day late for getting the files downloaded.

The extension got an update not sure when, but i can play it on the Mac without worrying about it. Maybe you need to delete and add the bookmark again. sorry i'm not much help. I also wish I could play from the first one and the days I missed.

This morning when I tried to play Wordle, I could not get the applet to run. I tried in both Chrome and Safari on my MBA running Monterrey. No matter what I do, I cannot get the extension to run. Anyone else experiencing this?

By Vicky on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

Iā€™m having the same exact problem. Iā€™ve tried it multiple times today, have redone the bookmarklet, Iā€™ve tried both with Safari and Chrome on my iPhone. And I cannot get the bookmarklet to work. Iā€™ve been playing this every day since Applevis released the podcast on how to make Wordle accessible. I really hope this can be fixed somehow as I love this game.

I've been using the Chrome Extension with the Brave browser on Windows and it stopped working for me yesterday. I wonder if this is all related. If someone finds a fix, please let us know.

By Greg on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

It appears that there was an update yesterday that crashed Wordle accessibility. My sighted wife said that the colors changed a little and Wordle had a little different look. For me, I'm no longer getting feedback on whether letters I've entered are correct, absent or present. I sent feedback to [email protected]. If anyone has a better site for feedback to the Times, please share. Encourage all to send email to them about our desire to have Wordle be accessible.

In Wordle if you go into settings, there is a link there to email feedback. The more of us that email, the more likely they are to act. I have already emailed this morning.

By Donna on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I sent feedback to the address Greg posted, and will also send feed back in Wordle. Thanks for mentioning that, I forgot it was there in settings.

I donā€™t think that contacting Wordle/NY Times will yield any results. It was a third party who created the chrome extension and webpage solution, so theyā€™re the ones who need to fix its compatibility. Maybe try contacting the creator here: https://github.com/minorninth/accessible-wordle

By Donna on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

There's no link to contact Dominic on that page. Also, I think the better option in the long run is for NYT to make the game accessible. That way, when new updates are released, accessibility has a better chance of not being broken. It doesn't seem too far-fetched that they would do this given that they already have high-contrast and dark modes. In my message I sent a link to the GitHub page, so they would no where to find the extension. I also posted on my FB page, and asked my friends to write them and ask them to fix accessibility. Many of them have, so some of you might want to also post to your social media networks.

In the meantime, until either the bookmarklet is fixed or the New York Times makes the Wordle page accessible by default, you can try using the method I came up with. I have been able to play Wordle reliably using this method. I created a forum topic on here with a detailed description on how to do it.

By Donna on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I have never been able to view my guesses on my phone, despite the fact that I use the desktop site. (As an aside, I'd love to know how those of you who have gotten that to work, did it.). Anyway, if, like me, you play on your Mac, when you put focus on each letter of your guess and press VO-Shift-L, you will get an image description for that letter. The background color is the color of the square. So if VO says something like "letters on a yellow background" you know that it's a yellow square, so the letter is present in the word, but not in the correct place. It's slow-going, but it works.

I should add that I had better luck doing this in Chrome than in Safari. Disregard this. I tried to delete the comment, but couldn't find a way to do it. I tried again in Safari and all went well.

By Vicky on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

Donna, Iā€™m so glad to hear that my method also works on the Mac, thatā€™s awesome!
To answer your question about how to locate your guessed words on iOS, locate the Settings button on the Wordle page - near the right-hand side of the screen - then swipe right. This method works reliably in Safari, particularly when you have not solved the word yet. I have not tested this in Chrome as yet. It is also possible to access your guest words after you have solved the Wordle, but that is a bit more tricky, and challenging to explain. Iā€™ll give it a shot though, and may come back and edit this comment later if I find a better way to explain it. What happens is that once you have solved the Wordle, the statistics information takes up a large part of the screen; so the trick is to find where the on-screen keypad is and then swipe left continually; eventually you will encounter your guessed words. Again, if I find a better way to explain this, I will come back and edit this comment. I hope this helps though.

By Vicky on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

Donna, I decided to add a new comment instead of editing my previous one, as I thought it would be easier to track. I just found a simpler way to describe the method to access all of your entries after the Wordle has been solved. First, make sure that focus is set to the top of the window. Next, set your rotor to either form controls or buttons, then swipe down until you get to the Settings button (Not to be confused with the page settings button), and swipe right. You will land on the first letter of your first guessed word, and you can continue to swipe right to navigate letter by letter corresponding to each of the words you have guessed. I really hope this helps. Having the ability to access all of the words I have guessed is a game changer for me.

You guys are awesome. Makes for awkward process of playing Wordle but workable. Do you think we will need a 12-Step group for people addicted to playing Wordle?

About four days ago, someone sent in an issue notification about the accessibility being broken. Dominic, the developer, replied with the following a couple of days ago: ā€œHey, thanks for writing and glad you've all been enjoying it! Yep, it's not just you - it looks like they totally rewrote the whole Wordle implementation on the New York Times site so the extension and bookmarklet broke. I can definitely fix it but it will take some time, I'll let you know.
- Dominicā€

So heā€™s aware of the issue and it sounds like a fix will be coming eventually.

Thanks for letting us know, and great to hear he plans to update it.
Disappointing though that the New York Times rewrote the implementation and did not make it accessible natively.

By wiljames on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

It has been fixed as of June 26, 2022. You will need to redo your booklet.

Also, it appears not to work on iOS 16 unless I did something wrong.

By Vicky on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I just tried it in Safari on iOS 15.5, and can confirm. It works beautifully. And, I can still access all of my guessed words, awesome! Thanks for letting us know!

By Donna on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I just got an email from a real person at Wordle customer service. They reported that the issue has been reported to their developers. I'm delighted that Dominic fixed it, but it'd be great to have a native solution. In the meantime, I'll re-download the extension. Cheers, everyone!

Thanks for letting us know. Itā€™s working for me in iOS 16.
I donā€™t know how you contacted Dominic, but Iā€™d like to express my gratitude to him.

I'm not sure how it's working for you in iOS 16. I do not get the notification that the accessibility plugin is running.

By Kellie on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I'm using IOS 15.5 on an iPhone 13 mini. I have deleted bookmarks for both wordle itself and the old jarva code. I've re-created both bookmarks without any success. There is no indication the accessibility mode is active and no indication of letter status etc. Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

By Richard Bartholomew on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

I started to try and play the game last week while on holiday and followed the instructions in the podcast. Unfortunately, when I try to go to ww.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/ under iOS 15.5, I get the message "error something went wrong". At first, I wondered if this was a region issue as I was in Portugal at the time; on returning to the UK, though, I am still getting that error both on my phone and using Windows. Is this no longer the site to be used, please, for the bookmarked code?
I tried going straight to the NY Times site on my phone but the bookmarked code still didn't work!

I have got the NY Times site to work on my PC but would like to be able to play the game on my Phone, too. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Thanks for any help.

By Richard Bartholomew on Thursday, July 14, 2022 - 17:14

Thanks for the new URL confirmation. Sadly, though, as mentioned by someone previously, it still doesn't seem to work under iOS15.5 so looks as though I'll need to stick with it on my PC until 16 comes out.

If it's possible, can the PowerLanguage link in the podcast be updated to reflect the new location, please, to avoid anyone else having a similar problem.

Thanks

Has anyone else lost the Share button? My husband can see it and click it for me, but I can't seem to access it using VO on the Mac.

By Wenwei on Friday, October 14, 2022 - 17:14

I can't share my pattern, either. Around this time, someone in my wordle group chat said that visually Wordle appears differently. She is bothered by the huge ad that she now has to swipe away.

Wordle might have been updated, but at least they didn't break the javascript!

By Greg on Friday, October 14, 2022 - 17:14

You can still get to the ā€œSharebutton by navigating by word through the stats etc. Slow way to get there but it works. Can also try turning Screen Recognition on and see if that will get you to the ā€œShareā€ button. Hope that helps.

By Donna on Friday, October 14, 2022 - 17:14

I can get to the share button the way that Greg describes, but cannot click on it.

By Donna on Friday, October 14, 2022 - 17:14

Hi all,

If you use Chrome rather than Safari, you can access the share button by going into Statistics, as described by Greg.
Cheers,
Donna

By wiljames on Friday, October 14, 2022 - 17:14

You simply take your finger down the the bottom of the screen and move it around until you find the share button. Swiping gets it sometimes, but explore by touch gets it more than swiping does.

Hi,
Just found this thread. Which information is accurate? I want to try the game. Thanks.

By Wenwei on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 - 17:14

Hi guys, tried to input my guess using an external keyboard on iOS. Pressing enter brought up the "settings" menu instead of submitting my word. Has anyone else experienced this?

By Ashleigh Piccinino on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 - 17:14

I know this isnā€™t about the game youā€™re speaking of however, you might want to try the accessible world ladders or from Woodside apps.
