Accessibility Comments

You might occasionally encounter some blank items next to the filter controls on the main vault screen and the passwords on the password list are broken up into 3 individual elements so it takes a few extra flicks to scroll past a password, but other than that the app works great with VoiceOver.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

Why would you use Bitwarden over competing, more accessible services? For me the reason I investigated the app is the fact that it's the most fully featured and maintained password manager that can be self-hosted. The app store description doesn't mention this, but you can run your own bitwarden server and synchronise your passwords to it rather than using the ones they provide, unlike something like OnePassword or last pass which on-top of tying you to their servers for storage also requires you to pay for a subscription. Bitwarden is also available as browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari as well as electron-based desktop apps for Windows and Mac. The iOS app will synchronize passwords periodically on its own thanks to push notifications, and because it integrates with iOS's password autofill API you should rarely need to open the app itself.

Working fine here

iPhone 13 Pro on iOS 16.3. I see a blank item after each of the filters like login, card etc, but other than that both the filters as well as viewing an individual item and revealing its password is completely accessible here. My first guess on what might have happened is you turned screen recognition on, except that's not supported on the iPhone 8 so I'm not sure what's going on.

Update: they do have an Apple Watch app

Hello,
It’s used requires a premium subscription, but bit warden does now have an Apple Watch app which will display 2-factor authentication codes. I beta tested it, and it is fully accessible with voiceover. I do not yet have a premium subscription, but hope to change that very soon.

Thanks for the review!

I too am now in flight from 1Password and looking for sovereignty-respecting, freedom-respecting options; that appears to mean Strongbox Pro perpetual or Bitwarden with a self-hosted vaultwarden instance (thankfully possible to do without Docker and can store data in a sqlite database quite unlike the official images). Does anyone with experience of both have something to say? I really need something that can, as best as possible, replace 1P in terms of overall functionality and conveniences. I do appreciate that Strongbox uses the native Safari autofill API on macOS as well; Bitwarden's Mac app is an Electron monstrosity just like, but worse than, 1Password, and uses a Safari web extension rather than the native APIs. I guess you just don't get a great deal on macOS if you want a cross-platform, functional alternative, although at least in principle the KeePass formats Strongbox uses means you can use the Windows apps that are accessible on that platform.

Test Vaultwarden Instance

I am now giving vaultwarden (and the Bitwarden clients) a shake-up. I have for this purpose a test instance. If you want to play, please drop me an email and include the email address you want me to invite. I'll then get you a link so you can create a vault and play with it. So far very, very promising. Shame send only supports a max upload of 500 mb, but honestly, that's hardly a big deal. Once everything is set up I barely need to touch the apps, though, fair play, it's clear 1Password put in a lot of effort even on their electron app by comparison. Still, if you want to see it for yourself without paying a penny, let me know. Remember this is a test server. Yubikey, breach notices and Duo are not configured, so only use OTP as I am not registering for API credentials. This is going to be blown away once I'm done with it, so don't rely on it; it's just for you to test the clients and web vault. Again, no important data!

giving bitwarden a try

I had to change the windows key as control shift l didn't autofill but other than that I'm happy with it. 1password will no longer be my password manager. It is a shame they used to be awesome.

It's unfortunate about 1P

It is still an excellent product in many ways. But the fact BitWarden is mostly equivalent just shows how badly they misjudged their most loyal Mac-using fans. A bit like Mac in general, really. If BitWarden could support autofill in the Mac app using the native Safari APIs, well, that would be a brutal irony. Think I'll ask them now, if I can get up the gumption to file a github issue. Never again will I be held hostage to a cloud service I can't replace. It's great.
