Description of App

Turn learning into a word puzzle in Study with Subwords! The idea is simple - you create a study list, like one for countries and their capital or English words and their translation into Spanish. Study with Subwords will split these words into pieces and you have to put them back together. With multiple learning modes, splitting types, and a study plan, Study with Subwords will help you to memorize that knowledge without ever feeling like learning. Features:

  • Download dozens of learning lists for free in the Gallery!
  • Create a learning plan to stay on track with your goals
  • Scan lists via the camera or import them as a CSV from Excel or Google Drive (Plus feature)
  • Excellent Accessibility features (VoiceOver Support, dyslexic font, large type support, custom color schemes, grid layout & custom rotors)
  • Multiple Study modes & ways to split the terms
  • Widget, iCloud Sync & SharedWithYou
  • Created by an Apple Design Award-nominated indie developer

Accessibility Comments

As the description says, the app has been designed to work great with VoiceOver and this is something I can confirm after beta testing it. In addition to just flicking around or touching the board, you can enable a number of extra rotors letting you find pieces that fit specific criteria like starting with a capital or lower case letter, or being specific lengths - there's actually so many rotors there's a section in the settings where you can decide which ones you want to use!

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

This is a fun and unique take on flash card like learning. When you select a list to play you have many options letting you decide what kind of questions the app will ask you or how the answers will be separated. And just like with Klemens's other games, you also have some pleasant sound effects to go with the experience.

A question and suggestion

By Roxann Pollard

7 months 3 weeks ago

First of all, if I am finished working on something for now, when I hit quit button, and come back in, it has populated something different. For example, I exited and the next thing I needed to solve was the capital of Idaho. When I opened it back up, it showed me doing Minnesota, which I had already solved. I don't understand why it doesn't save my place, and why it doesn't acknowledge the previous states already finished.

The suggestion that I have is, when solving Correctly, the game will announce what should be the next state, but it announces the state I just finished. It seems to me that the next item should automatically announced, not re-announcing the state I just finished. Is there a way to correct this?

Hi Roxann,

Thanks for your feedback and trying out the app!
If you hit quit, then no progress is stored. I should probably add an alert to indicate this. And there is currently no pause function where you can pause one level and continue working on it later. I can think of adding one in the future if enough people want something like this.

When re-opening a level, the words are randomly selected. So it can currently happen that you get words twice when re-entering. I know that this is not ideal. So in a future update, words will be ranked based on how often you've solved them already!

As for the suggestion. After solving a word, you should get both confirmation that it was correct, like "Berlin is the correct answer for Germany", but VoiceOver should also speak the next question after that, like "Next: Austria". Does that not work for you?

All the best and thanks again,
Klemens

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Yes, please add a way to save your progress, and some sort of a leveling system.

After a puzzle has been solved, the next item does come up, but voiceover doesn't say wat the next item is automatically. For example, the next item that comes up would be Texas, but VoiceOver announces the state that I just solved, instead. I must go and locate the item on the screen, to see what is the next item to be solved.

Hi Roxann,

I'll look into the issue of VoiceOver not announcing the next item. Which setup do you have? iPhone or iPad? Which OS version?

And to everyone else - did anyone have the same issue? It seems to be working fine on my device, so I could use any hint I can get to reproduce the issue!

Thank you!

Hi!

Wanted to inform you that after some feedback, the subscription pricing for Study Plus has now been dropped from 29.99€ a year to just 9.99€ a year!

If anyone has any wishes for features that I could add in the future, please let me know!

Best,
Klemens

I am presently using iPhone SE, third GEN, iOS 16.4.1. I just completed another puzzle, Arkansas/Little Rock. When it finished, it announced Arkansas and that little rock was the correct capital. But that's all that it said. I had to touch the next button in order to see that it indicated Idaho.

Hi Roxann,

just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about this problem. I still cannot reproduce it on my end, unfortunately. But Apple announced a new API that will let me prioritise accessibility announcements, which should definitely fix the issue on your end. This API is only be available in iOS 17, so it will take a little longer. Sorry!

Update 1.2

By Klemens

4 months 3 weeks ago

Hi everyone!

I just released update 1.2 to the App Store! This update should make language learning much better. Previously, everything was read to you by VoiceOver in your VoiceOver language, which lead to very weird pronunciations that were hard to understand. Now, VoiceOver now announces vocabulary in the correct language. So English words are pronounced in English, Spanish words are pronounced in Spanish, French words in French etc.

If you have any feedback, please let me know!

Best,
Klemens
