In this episode, Thomas Domville teaches you how to use Screen Recording on iOS and iPadOS.
Screen Recording is a feature that allows you to capture what's happening on your screen. This can be useful for creating tutorials, demos, or simply sharing something interesting with your friends and family.
To set up this feature, go to Settings > Control Center and double-tap the "Insert Screen Recording" button under the "more controls" heading. To create a recording, open Control Center by placing your finger on the top edge of the device until you hear a tone, and sliding it straight down until you hear the second tone (devices without a Home button) or placing your finger on the status bar and swiping up with three fingers (devices with a Home button). Double-tap the Screen Recording button; there will be a three-second countdown before recording starts.
To stop recording, either press the Side button to lock the device, double-tap the Screen Recording button in Control Center again, or double-tap the screen recording button in the status bar. By default, the recording will be saved to your Photos library, however this can be changed if you wish by focusing on the "Screen recording" button in Control Center and choosing the "open controls" rotor action.

Question on volume
Sometimes when I make a screen recording the volume of Voiceover during the scrreen recording drops dramatically. In fact, once whenn I did this in order to file a bug report with Apple Accessibility, the volume of Voiceover was so low that they couldn't hear it. As soon as I ended the voice recording, Voiceover volume returned to normal.
Any idea what is going on here and/or how to fix this problem?
Thanks.

The Stereo Thing
I'm not sure I understand what is going on there with plugging in a dongle to get stereo in the recording. Would you explain a little more about what that device is,?
Zoom not broadcasting sound from voiceover.
First, let me congratulate you for a podcast well done!
Secondly, it is worth noting that Apple does not let you broadcast speech from Voiceover through screen recording in zoom or other applications, supposedly for safety reasons, so that is something you should be aware of.
In case you need to demonstrate something in a zoom meeting, and you need sound from Voiceover to get through to your audience, the best way to do it is by doing the screen recording in photos ahead of time, as described in the podcast, and then share screen in zoom and play that video back for your audience.

Re: Question on volume
When headphones aren't connected, your phone defaults to the earpiece for audio output when you start a screen recording. This is possibly what happened for you, as it makes the system volume seem lower. To fix this, open Control Center after starting the recording. Then change the audio output from the earpiece to your phone's speaker.
RE: The Stereo Thing
You asked a great question! Both pairs of headphones I own came with a wired cable with a 3.5mm male headphone jack. This type of jack typically plugs into a headphone jack on a computer, so you can listen to your computer audio through your headphones.
Apple sells a dongle that you can plug the 3.5mm male jack into on one end. The other end is a Lightning connector or USB-C connector, depending on your iPhone or iPad model. These dongles are inexpensive and can be found on Apple's website. I got mine for $8.50. Just search for "female 3.5mm to USB-C dongle."
In addition to transmitting audio from your device to your headphones, this dongle will also support the microphone on your headphones, if they have one. I hope this helps!
RE: Zoom not broadcasting sound from voiceover
I appreciate you sharing this informative comment about a possible audio issue when sharing to Zoom. Your solution suggestion is very helpful! Thank you.
Thanks, AnonyMouse
I went back and listened to that section again, and I understand now. I do have a couple of those dongles. It was the bluetooth devices that make the recording go mono, and I didn't put that together the first time through.
I have used the built in mic during screen recordings I made with my old iPhone 7, but I don't know if they came out in mono or stereo.
Congratulations, there was only one thing missing:
Congratulations, great Thomas! You can always explain and demonstrate the features of iOS very well. The only thing I believe you forgot to mention is that if we decide to use the microphone built into the iPhone and we want to enable the microphone capture button So that we can record our voice in screen recordings, VoiceOver is diverted to the call speaker that is at the top of the screen, in case we have not connected a headset before starting recording. This behavior exists so that the VoiceOver voice is not picked up by the microphone and therefore comes out duplicated in the recording, but it is possible to correct this behavior by accessing the control center again, Locating the AirPlay button, selecting this button and choosing the iPhone output as the speaker.
Saving your screen recording in an audio format
Hi there,
First of all, well done on a brilliant podcast.
You mentioned during the podcast that you can save your screen recording as audio.
How can I do that?
all the best,
Gary
There is a way of saving your screen rcccording as an audio
Hi.
As the subject states there's a way of saving your screen recorning as an audio.
install the app called dolby on and then import your screen recording into the dolbi on app.
Go to the share option within the recording and choose more audio apps
Then you should be able to save this to files.
Hope this helps.
If you don't want the dolbi effect then you can turn it off within the recording.
Hope this helps.
getting to the control centre from the top of the screen.
hi, i noticed during the cast, that you were just swiping down from the top of the screen with one finger to get to the control centre.
i am using an iphone 11 with ios 18.
the only way that i seem to be able to get to this is by accessing the status bar and then swiping up with three fingers.
am i doing something wrong, or is it just my model of iphone?
thanks,
patrick
Accessing Control Center
Hi Patrick,
To access the Control Center on an iPhone without a Home Button (including your iPhone 11), put one finger at the top of the screen and slide down. I perform this gesture by planting the pad of my finger on the screen, then sliding down. You will feel a haptic vibration, indicating that you have opened the Control Center. VoiceOver should also state this when the Control Center is opened.
Hope this helps,
Michael
