Changing the Way iTunes on iPod Lists Albums

When I go into iTunes on my iPod Touch, the albums with tracks by various artists are split up into separate albums. So iTunes thinks I have twice as many albums as I actually do. I had this problem running iTunes for Windows on my PC, and the solution there was to check the "songs" radio button. Then my album count was correct. I don't, however, know what to do on the iPod.

I've never tried this, and could be so far off base it's not funny. In iTunes, you can edit not only the main fields like Song Title, Artist, Album and so on. There are also fields specifically for sorting, such as Album Sort, and Artist Sort. Here comes the wild guessing. Perhaps if you put something into the Artist Sort, or Album Sort fields, in iTunes, that reflects the nature of the various artist created album, on the iPod, it will use the alternative sort field, and have everything grouped easier for you. Or not. Your mileage may vary.

I'd be willing to bet money that your compilation albums were originally in WMA format. If so, there's a known bug in iTunes, at least on the Windows version, where when converting to any file format from WMA, the Album Artist tag is not saved. See this thread. http://applevis.com/forum/general-chat/bug-itunes-album-artist-tag-not-being-saved-when-converting-wmamy-itunes-library The only way I know of to fix this is to use Get Info in iTunes to edit the tags manually. Under the Album Artist tag, you'll need to type "Various Artists" in the field for each compilation album, and for each instance of each compilation album. This will fix the problem, and unfortunately, this may be the only option for blind Windows users.
