Good afternoon, all! I have an iPhone 13 pro, and especially today, the battery has been draining faster than usual and it's been getting much warmer than normal as well. I keep screen curtain on most of the time, and I haven't really been doing anything different since iOS 18, so I'm a bit baffled as to what might be going on. Especially in the past couple of days, I've mostly used Dystopia, messages, mail and Replika. I've played a bit of Word Voyance and dice world too, but I don't remember either of those causing issues in the past. I guess I'm just posting here to find out if others have had excessive battery drain or overheating since updating to iOS 18, especially on older devices. I had almost talked myself of getting the iPhone 16, but if this keeps up, I might have to upgrade whether I want to or not. Thanks for any advice you may have.

Battery drain
I have experienced battery drain since Ios 18 update. Seems like its dying faster and my health is fine. I'm on iPhone 15 pro. Screen curtain on brightness also at 0%.
Questions and suggestions
Hi,
Some questions:
1. Do you have any resource intensive apps that are running in the background (app switcher), such as Seeing AI or Envision AI? I have personally experienced in the past, where the Seeing AI app can severely overheat an iPhone if it is running in the background for too long.
2. Under display and motion from within the accessibility settings, have you tried reducing motion and white point intensity? May help to reduce battery resources.
3. Does the overheating happen regardless of any apps running in the app switcher? In other words, is it still overheating even if there are no apps currently running?
4. What do you typically have your brightness set to? I know you mentioned screen curtain, but what about your actual iPhones brightness level? Also, do you use auto brightness? (You should, unless you purposefully keep your brightness at zero).
Some suggestions:
1. If you have not already, go to the accessibility settings, I mentioned above, and enable reduce white point intensity, and reduce motion. Also, with the reduce motion, enable Crossfade transitions. It really does help.
2. For troubleshooting purposes only, tried disabling screen curtain, disabling, auto brightness, and purposefully setting your brightness to 0%.
3. Close every single app from app switcher, and power down your phone. Do not use the restart feature, but actually power it off completely, and then power it back on.
4. Go to the general settings, and go down to the reset option, and reset your network settings. Yes, you’ll have to reconnect Bluetooth devices, and yes, you will have to reconnect your Wi-Fi. It is a small price to pay for a working iPhone, in my opinion.
I hope the suggestions help you out. 🙂
Battery drain is normal.
I have the battery drain issue too, but always have that when I first upgrade to a new OS. Give it a few days and your battery should go back to working as normal. I'm also on the iPhone 13, but just the base 13 not the pro. Overheating is strange though, that shouldn't be happening. What's your battery health percentage at? You can check it in settings/battery
Mine's Just Laggy
I'm on the 13 standard and have experienced egregious lag today. Can't wait for the new phone because I'm so tired of this.
I have experienced this…
I have experienced this issue while using iOS 18 beta since July with my iPhone 15 Pro. The worst I experienced was receiving the overheating warning a couple of times while using it outdoors in direct sun. Thiese usually occurred shortly after an update and went away after a few days and a restart. Like others stated, check your battery health and if the problem persists, contact Apple Support.
It’s iOS 18.0 that’s responsible for overheating and abnormal Le
My iPhone 12 mini is fully optimized as per some of the instructions by other comments here. My usage conditions and scenarios are exactly the same before and after. And my phone is suddenly overheating considerably and the batteries is draining considerably more than before the update to iOS 18.0. I experienced the same symptoms immediately starting with one of the iOS 16 updates and the only thing that fixed it was one or 2.version updates to iOS 16.
13 pro
No issues lucky me. I always do a restart after updating iOS. Helps very much and I think people suggest that you do so.
Reset settings
I hear you, I actually reset my settings for the update. Yes, it’s a pain to do so, but totally worth it in my humble opinion.
No problems here.
No overheating, no lagging. I have a 13 mini.
same here about battery drain
Hi,
I'm also on a 15 pro, and with no apps open, and not using it for 3 hours, the phone went from 84 percent to 76 percent, and screen curtain is on, and brightness is at zero. Also, I'm in low power mode. That never used to happen until I updated to 18. The phone's only 5 months old, and I've only done 67 charge cycles,. This isn't cool. Since I got my 15 pro, I've only been charging it when it gets down to 40 some percent, even if I have to use one of my power banks to charge it. It's easier and cheaper to buy a new power bank than a new iPhone or iPhone battery. Are there any solutions to fix the battery drain that came with 18?
Background app refresh
Just a thought, but maybe try disabling background app refresh for the time being?
this is what am scared of…
this is what am scared of while updating.
I've a base 13. and its only a few months old.
I really want to upgrade. but am hella indesisive.
:(
i can't upgrade to a new device and don't want to either.
erm, I can take the plunge and update incase am the lucky one for it to not happen.. am too confused.
lol
My advice…
My advice will be to reset your settings. Not do a complete factory reset, but just reset your settings. Then update to iOS 18, then go to the settings and adjust things as you see fit.
I know, I know, this will be time consuming. I also know that a lot of people hate doing the step. However, it is your best bet for ensuring you do not get a lot of these bugs, and that you have a smoother transition from iOS17 to iOS 18.
@Brian yeah i think i'm…
@Brian
yeah i think i'm gonna do this.
else i'll always be indesisive about updating haha
👍
Good luck and happy updating! 🙂
Thanks for all the responses
I just want to thank everyone who responded to my question. *knock on wood* Things seem to be much better now. Perhaps Wednesday was just a fluke. My battery health was at 87 percent last time I checked, so I'm sure that's a factor as well. I still think I might end up with the ultramarine iphone 16 at some point, but for now, I feel confident that I don't have to rush that decision; the 13 pro probably has at least a few more good months in it. I guess a part of me just wants to trade it in while I'm still able to get $340 for it. LOL!
I mean…
I mean, if you can honestly get that much off of a new iPhone 16, then why not? 🙂👍
Background app refresh
Hi,
I keep my phone in low power mode unless it's plugged in, because there is absolutely no need for apps like facebook to refresh constantly, in my oppinion. So whenever low power mode is enabled, background app refresh gets disabled. Knock on wood, the battery drain hasn't been as bad today. I did power the phone completely off, and turn it back on a little while later.
My 13 mini gets warm even in iOS 17
My 13 mini gets warm from time to time. I'm still on iOS 17. I used most of the battery saving tips. I checked my Wi-Fi and cellular strength when this happens to see if they're low and the phone is working harder to pick up a signal. But, it isn't. I have no idea why this happens. Fortunately, it's not frequent.
Hopefully iOS 18 will settle down.
