Fascinating discovery regarding notifications on locked screen

Apple Beta Releases

Hi Guys,

This may also be true of iOS18.1 but as I'm on the public Beta thought I'd drop it in the beta forum.

For those of us that have the issue where all notifications are shown as stacked even if you want them as a list I think I've found out what the issue is. It's screen curtain. Whenever I do an update I turn off screen curtain just in case of issues needing sighted help. I updated today to public beta 2 and forgot to turn sc back on. Notifications showed as a list and I thought great it is fixed. Then once I turned sc on again and got more than 1 notification it showed as stacked again. Purely out of interest I turned sc off whilst on the locked screen and they showed up as a list. they stay as a list even if you then turn sc back on until you lock the phone again then we are back to stacked. What sc has to do with this no idea but it certainly seems to be the culprit.

Share Your Bug Reports with AppleVis

If you experience a bug in Apple Beta Software, the most important thing you can do is to file a report in Feedback Assistant. Please do not assume that Apple is already aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference; your report may provide crucial information, and submitting bug reports directly to Apple helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority Apple is likely to give to fixing the bug.

If you are using beta software, please use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you are using a public release, this blog post explains how to report the issue and what information to include.

In 2025, AppleVis launched the Community Bug Reporting Program with the goal of improving the quality and quantity of information we share with the community about bugs in Apple software releases. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please submit your reports via our Community Bug Report Form.

All reports shared with AppleVis must first be filed with Apple via Feedback Assistant. More information about the Community Bug Program is available here.

That is very interesting. Perhaps there is some kind of display compression going on when screen curtain is activated, you know behind the scenes, for lack of a better description. That or notifications are programmed to go into a collapsible stack mode while screen curtain is activated, so there is less "screen" to actually darken?
Just random thoughts here. πŸ™‚

I have this stacked collapsed bug on ios 18.1 stable and sc off/on doesn't seem to change things for me at least on this version.

Ye'h I can't say if it would have worked for me on 18.1 as it never came up. Maybe in 18.2 they are working on a fix and this is a halfway measure. Phone is 15 pro but on my work phone iPhone 14 it works perfectly anyway on 18.1.
