Something strange just happened to me...

Last night I updated my iPhone SE 2022 from iOS 18.0.1 to iOS 18.1.1. Just before the update, as it was saying verifying update, I noticed it was at 27% so plugged it in. After the phone updated I noticed although it still said charging, it was at 24%. I brushed this off though and continued using it as normal until I got the message that the phone was at 20%. The battery was going down even though in the status bar it still seemed to think it was charging. So I unplugged it while I thought about the problem. When I unplugged the charger the status bar switched to saying not charging, and when I plugged it back in it said it was charging again but the charging tone didn't play and the battery still went down. That is until I found the notification I had left untouched that said the software update was finished installing. I pressed that, plugged the charger in again and it worked.
My charger and my phone both work as normal now but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this fluke and /or knows why it happened? Come to think of it I have updated software while charging my phone and found the battery to be lower than it started at, but I guess I never paid much attention because I always cleared that notifcation immediately and then the phone would just keep charging.
Have a great day / night!

I cannot say that I noticed anything related to charging, but I also have the same model iPhone as you, and I did notice when I upgraded from 18.1, to 18.1.1, some of my applications will not work until I clear that notification you mentioned above.

Chalk it up to software update weirdness ...

Depending on your battery health power consumption during installation could exceed the charging rate. I believe it charges the battery first and then the device runs off that rather than having a direct power hook up, if that makes sense. I've certainly had issues with low powered chargers not juicing my iPhone if I'm using it to listen to a book or stream a movie. I'm guessing that this might be the issue here as software installation can be quite power intensive.

My battery health is 87% and it pretty much always works, and pretty well it does, except for one time I was at this hotel and the plugs didn't work very well, but that's an obvious one. Maybe just a software update thing because software updates need a lot of power

A little while back, before ios 18 was out, my iPhone suddenly stopped being able to charge. The power just kept draining away. In a panic I ordered a Magsafe charger from Amazon. But then when my phone got to, maybe, 20% or less it suddenly decided that actually it would charge again and now it works fine. Never did use the Magsafe charger.

Magsafe is all rather underwhelming. Shame it can't be used for data too but, aside from some moderately useful means of slapping a phone onto a floating charger and wireless alignment, I'm not sure if the slower charging, the battery damage or general energy waste is really worth it.

I agree - I’ve never understood why people like it so much. I wonder if it coms into its own when you can clip on a battery pack when you are carrying it about.

Anyway for me it was just an act of desperation and I keep it as a backup. It’s a little worrying how dependent I’ve become on my phone. And with Glide incoming next year I don’t see it lessening any time soon.

Now that I have 16 pro max, got one from amazon that it was 26$ which original price was $75. Is nice that I only use cable to charge the battery.

The battery pack thing is okay in a pinch but it isn't like a super solid connection. It also makes the phone awkward to hold.

I dunno, I think all these phone manufacturers are clutching at straws. Aside from the questionable advantage of AI an iPhone 16, for the most part, does the same as an iphone 12. I know the battery is significantly better, but that's not new tech. I suspect they are using it as a reason for people to upgrade, holding it back somewhat. I'm a cynic though.

They have magnet mounts for the phones that don't have anything to do with charging, more like sticking it to a dashboard or maybe your shirt. That almost seems more useful. LOL
@mr grieves, it's probably healthy to have a worry about becoming dependent on a single piece of technology for your day-to-day life.

FYI the magnent is very strong, you could shake it and it will not come lose. Have you use one? Also depend on the type of battery you get.
