the expressiveness of eloquence voices

Hi all,

I just wanted to come on here and state an observation that a lot of us probably noticed, but would love thoughts/perspective/discussion.

I've noticed that when it comes to punctuation, primarily question marks and exclamation marks, the eloquence voices are the only voices that read those well. A text like "good morning!" (with an exclamation mark) is read differently than "good morning." with just a period, and I wonder why this is.

Are there any settings I could adjust to make it more expressive? I noticed that, for example, the Alex voice does a great job with question marks but not exclamation marks. And you can't have everything, so if i switch voices, maybe that's just something I deal with. But I wish you could change its level of expressiveness or something.

Would love everyone's thoughts, opinions, and perspective, especially coming from those who love Alex. Does it bother you that not all punctuation is properly conveyed in a message or email?

P.S. I tried that custom punctuation group where I made it say "exclamation mark" and that lasted about five minutes before it got on my nerves.

I am, I'm using Eloquence on my phone. I have Alex on my mac. I was just saying that if I _did_ switch, it would be something I'd just have to deal with. But context matters, at least to me. Or should I say, inflection.

I know how much you love Eloquence :)

Does the pitch range make any difference in this case? I know that’s more inflection than expression. I know what you mean about eloquence. It definitely reads things with! Differently with the period. That’s the way that that’s in the size is. I think some of the older voices are actually, but it was expressing the proper way for certain punctuation marks than some of the newer ones. I know there’s a lot of people who love eloquent on here so I guess I’d stick with that you should be fine. But yeah, there are certain voices that are just not gonna express the same way. For example I love Karen premium, but she cannot distinguish between a? Or. Or an!. You’re looking Karen enhanced. But then if you use regular, Karen and she can distinguish your period in a? So I’m not sure why some of them are robotic. Voices are actually more expressive in some ways. I guess we’ll have to see what happens as Voice is. Keep improving overtime that we get for our phones.

Hi,

Turn up the pitch range. That will make the eloquent voice sound more human. One of my friends has the Pitch range set to 100 and it sounds really good.

It sounds like it's super excited about everything. I'm not a fan, it doesn't sound very human like. Maybe I did it wrong?

You definitely didn’t do it wrong. Putting the pitch range John eloquence all the way up to 100 does make it sound like it’s super excited about everything. It’s very odd. I tried it once. I’m really not a fan.

I have the pitch range set to 50 and it makes Eloquence sound more expressive without sounding strange or weirdly robotic.

I haven’t tried that. Maybe I will. Is anybody else seeing the bug though that if you switch from eloquent to another synthesizer that it will not save your settings? I’ve definitely seen this basically since we first got iOS 26. I really didn’t report it to Apple because I figured that that synthesizer isn’t popular enough for them to really bother trying to forget what’s going on with it. I kind of doubt there will be any improvements to the quality of eloquence on the phones. If I have to use eloquence, it would definitely sound better on my computer on the phone. But I kind of want to play around with the picture in a little bit. I do like Eddie and Sandy and flow on the phone so maybe I will play around with that. I’ll come back here and see what I think.

I tried it, I just leave it at its default setting. Anything higher sounds too excited for me lol.

Also, that's so interesting that you like Sandy! I used to like her, I lasted about two weeks with that voice before giving up because I didn't like the pitch. And yes, I tried lowering it. That didn't help.

@ Singer Girl, I went to your profile page to see if you had contact information so we could email or something, since you seem to like the same type of techy stuff I like, but it's not there. If you're interested, I think mine is on my profile.

Turning up, the pitch range was really weird. Also, Mike eloquent kind of got messed up because when I went to go switch it to flow sounded more like Grandma, but it was saying the flow selected. I have no idea what’s going on with it so I just went back to vocalizer. The thing is for Sandy on the phone. You have to turn off. The breathing is completely the sound halfway decent. Otherwise it’s really scratching and static or something. I don’t know what the heck they didn’t do it, but it got really messed up. It’s the one that’s Bobby in Jaws. The kind of ruined it on the phone. All overall quality of eloquence on the phone is really weird kind of muffled and just not great. I wish it could get better, but I don’t know that it will. I’m also having a really hard time getting used to Elwood’s coming out of an apple product. It just seems weird. I’m just not used to it. But like even on Jaws I don’t even really use eloquence anymore. I think I just got so tired of it even though I grew up with it. But I at least gave it a try. I’m back to regular Karen my phone. I’ll probably have to download free meme or something at some point but right now I’ve got the regular one because she’s already preinstalled. I don’t know if anybody else noticed this or not but ever since iOS 26.4 I am not able to download any voiceover voices at all either for my personal hotspot or through cellular data. I have to be on actual Wi-Fi to download voices. It doesn’t matter if they’re vocalizer or the Apple voices or any voices it doesn’t make any difference. Also, just today I had all of the voices and the English language options. Auto download to my iPhone SE, but not to my iPhone 15. I have no idea what’s going on with that. Yes I would’ve created this into a new topic but the thing is I really don’t know how to make a topic on here so that’s why I asked if anybody saw that on here.

You have to turn VoiceOver off and back on if you change from one eloquent voice to another.

Regarding Sandy, yeah, I changed the breathiness to 0 and they did help a bit. It just has a sharper sound.
