ghostWriter Markdown

Description of App

ghostWriter Markdown is an accessibility-first, plain-text writing app for notes, articles, documentation, and full manuscripts. Write individual documents, organize chapters, and compile your work into a finished export.

VoiceOver was at the center of the design from the first line of code. Created by a blind developer, ghostWriter gives screen reader users and anyone who loves plain text a clean, native place to write.

So what's Markdown?

Markdown adds structure using ordinary punctuation. A number sign makes a heading. A dash makes a list item. Your document stays readable as plain text, and you can render it to see the finished formatting.

You don't have to know Markdown to start. Insert Actions adds common elements, the Markdown Reference provides examples, and the included ghostWriter Help Manual explains writing, organizing, and exporting your work.

Writing Made Easy:

β€’ A native editor that keeps Markdown punctuation visible and you in control of the source
β€’ Insert links, images, headings, quotes, code, lists, tasks, tables, and rules
β€’ Automatic continuation for bullets, numbered lists, and tasks
β€’ Indent and outdent with tabs or spaces
β€’ Native Find and Replace, dictation, braille input, and text selection
β€’ A configurable Status Bar with line and column position, word, sentence, and character counts, heading level, and selection counts
β€’ Automatic saving, plus collision detection if the same document is open on separate devices
β€’ Start in the Library, a new document, or your last document

Useful Navigation:

β€’ Use Outline to jump to document headings
β€’ Move through headings with a three-finger horizontal VoiceOver swipe while editing
β€’ Jump to Line in long documents
β€’ Search document names and contents
β€’ Return to your remembered editing position in each file

Keep Files Organized:

β€’ Create, rename, and move nested folders
β€’ Pin documents you keep coming back to
β€’ Sort by name, created, modified, or last opened, or arrange files and folders manually
β€’ Restore removed files from Recently Deleted
β€’ Import Markdown, plain text, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations into Markdown

Build Your Manuscript:

β€’ Compile documents from nested folders into a single export
β€’ Choose which files to include and arrange chapters for each compilation
β€’ Keep research and notes nearby while excluding them from compilations
β€’ Track word, sentence, and character totals for individual files or whole folders
β€’ Control heading structure when combining documents

Render and Share:

β€’ Render Markdown as structured HTML with semantic headings, lists, tables, and links
β€’ Export individual documents or compilations as Markdown, plain text, HTML, EPUB, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, eBraille, or BRF
β€’ Customize Word exports with your own JSON stylesheets, optional title and subtitle styles, and a supplied Large Print stylesheet

Your Files, Your Devices:

β€’ Ordinary Markdown files, visible in the Files app
β€’ On-device storage or iCloud Drive syncing across iPhone, iPad, and Mac
β€’ Open and edit your files in other apps that read text
β€’ No proprietary format and no dependence on ghostWriter to keep your work

Accessibility:

Developed toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA and tested with VoiceOver as a primary interaction method.

β€’ Native controls with familiar roles and behaviors
β€’ Dynamic Type, including accessibility text sizes
β€’ System, monospaced, rounded, and serif editor typefaces
β€’ Light, dark, and system appearance
β€’ Voice Control, Switch Control, and hardware keyboard support
β€’ Optional keyboard shortcuts for common actions
β€’ Reduced-motion support

Privacy:

No accounts. No sign-in. No ads. No analytics. No tracking. No data collection. No AI tools.

There is no server behind this app. Your documents stay on your device or in your own iCloud, and they never travel anywhere you don't send them.

Made by a blind developer who got tired of tools that treated screen reader support as an afterthought.

Accessibility Comments

The app is built with VoiceOver users in mind by a blind person. It has amazing navigation features such as a 3 finger swipe left and right to navigate between headings in your document! You can also have it announce when you type something like a link that it was successfully created.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

This is a great Markdown editor! No need to worry about a live preview trying to mess up the editor for VoiceOver. In the editor you get raw Markdown, but you can render it right in the app as an HTML page. It also has an outline feature where you could see the headings of your document. And the editor remembers your last position you were in the document!

I am considering moving to this app as a free alternative to Ulysses, however I noticed that when pasting a document in from Ulysses the paragraphs were not formatted when rendering the file. And I noticed that in this app, paragraphs have to be double spaced. That's going to be frustrating to fix and get used to.
Is there a way to make it so that paragraphs can be single spaced instead or quickly turn a single spaced document into a double spaced one? Because I have some quite long in progress stories that it'd be very tedious to do manually.
As a side note I like the little noises the app makes when rendering.

I've also noticed that smart punctuation doesn't work in the app, and I made sure the setting was turned on to check. Example:
"it does quotes like this"
β€œInstead of quotes like this.”

Zoe,
I think you change the double space for paragraphs in settings. as for your smart punctuation, I think there's also a setting for that as well.

There isn't, I checked. Both the app and my phone settings. The app can only change indents, not lines between paragraphs, and I have smart punctuation enabled and it works everywhere but in this app. It also won't let me enter a β€” either.

I'd recommend contacting the developer, Marco, directly. He's very responsive to feedback and there's already a TestFlight build with some of my feature requests.

Fantastic app.

I'm likely going to switch from ulysses myself.

As I use windows and iOS, it just won't be my ideal setup. But it works well and I'll recommend it to anyone who needs some sort of writing software for iOS.

What sorts of features did you request, and do you have a test flight link?

By WellF on Thursday, September 10, 2026 - 16:34

Usually they aren't public unless the developer themselves publish it.

I understand. Thank you so much for telling me.

Hi. Is there a way to add code to change just one portion to another language? I tried typing it in using the insert code feature, but when I rendered it, it didn't seem to work.
