Description of App
Final Fortress is a match-3 puzzle. The whole game is the screen of an old terminal: green text, one cursor, and you, the commandant of the last fortress.
It is a quiet game. A working console in the dark, the hum of the systems, static like rain. A watch takes fifteen or twenty minutes: do the day's tasks, read what came in, hand over. Nothing hurries you, and nothing happens while you are away. Come back after a week and the fortress is exactly as you left it.
Match tiles to finish the day's tasks. Each task brings supplies. Spend them to repair the fortress: reactor, hydroponics, antenna, armory, infirmary. Every repaired system opens new missions.
Match 4 or more to charge special tiles. They clear a line, a block, or every tile of one kind. Swap two charged tiles together and they fire as one bigger shape, up to the whole board.
The board gets busier as you go: convoy crates that pay out at the bottom, sealed containers with a special tile inside, interference to clear layer by layer, burned sectors the tiles fall past. Some tasks ask for a pattern: decode a sequence in order, or fill a gauge in every column.
AI Madness is a mode of its own, outside the fortress. Each shift bends the rules: boards up to 10 by 13, sometimes only three kinds of tile, cascades that barely stop, tasks that may be impossible. On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device model (Foundation Models) picks the shift's character and writes its line in the log. Nothing leaves the phone. Otherwise the terminal does the same on its own. Nothing is at stake and nothing is banked. Every shift has a code. Send it to a friend and they get exactly the same board.
There is a story in the log: three acts, four threads, and the notes of the commandants who held the fortress before you. It comes a few lines at a time. Read it or skip it. The game never nags about it. Repair the antenna and you will see a board with other players' stations. It is view-only, there is no chat, and it updates once a day. When the story is over, the log keeps going quietly on its own.
The music belongs to your fortress alone. The sound is synthesized live and seeded from your fortress, so your station hums like no other and never loops. The hum changes with what is running, with the hour of the night and with the weather outside. Each kind of tile has its own note, and a cascade climbs the scale. One extra room, The Long Dark, carries a call of its own.
Three more stations use the instruments in your phone: a weather post that reads the barometer, an acoustic modem and a direction finder.
A home screen widget shows your fortress at a glance, in StandBy too.
No ads. No lives, timers, energy or streaks. No pop-ups, no push notifications, no accounts, no daily rewards to come back for. Run out of moves and the terminal just says the packet was lost. Try again, nothing is taken away. You can drop a task at any time. Most purchases are cosmetic only: screen colors, ambience rooms, strike sounds, custom names. One purchase, Support the Watch, buys nothing at all: it is a thank-you and nothing more. Nothing you can buy helps you play, and no purchase moves you up the board.
Works offline, on iPhone and iPad. Fully playable with VoiceOver, with a flicker-free stable phosphor mode and a calm mode that softens the board's flashes and haptics.

Canβt seem to get into game
So I opened the game and hit start watch but then it just pulls up this menu with the components that I have which is zero for everything and I donβt see a way to start playing the actual game. Can someone tell me which button depressed to actually start playing the game.

Hey! Thanks for trying the game. You can double tap the dispatch squad button, then it will give you a few missions to choose with their objective. Before sending the convoy you should read the manual available on the same screen.

Hi! I'm the developer of Final Fortress. Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to write such detailed feedback. It is great to read that you have already repaired the reactor and the hydroponics.
Both of your ideas make a lot of sense: a setting to hear the tile name before its row and column, and a way to hear what a special tile does right on the board. I want to add both. Before I do, I would like to ask you a few questions, so that I get the details right. Would it be okay if I ask them here?
Thank you again, and enjoy the game!

Hi!
Here is the full path. On the first screen, double-tap BEGIN WATCH. The screen that opens is the fortress overview, and the zeros are normal at the start: those are your stores, and missions fill them.
Swipe right past the stores until you hear DISPATCH A SQUAD and double-tap it.
On the next screen, the mission called CONVOY is the only one open at first, the others read NO SIGNAL until you repair more of the fortress.
Double-tap CONVOY and the board opens.
You're gonna kill me with all these addictive game recs!
How the heck do you keep finding all these great games! You're gonna kill me with all the great games you keep recommending. My brain is gonna be nothing but puzzles and matching and cards! Nice job.
Matching tiles.
Edited to add a better question:
When I pick "run diagnostics", it says there are "eight legal exchanges". How do we tell what these are? What is a legal exchange?
I think I got one match. But a lot of the time if I pick an action, nothing seems to happen. So suppose I have two alloy tiles on a row, and a different one to the right. Below that different one is an alloy tile. Obviously I want to get that up next to the other two. So I pick that one and swipe to "swap up". It doesn't seem to do anything. I assume we're matching row or column, not diagonally.
To be clear, I have a situation like so:
A A B
C D A
If I pick swap up on 'a' in row "c d a", what I would expect is that 'a' would swap up to the row above, and 'b' would either also move up, or they would exchange places, so the lower row is now "c d b", and the upper row is three 'a' tiles that match.
Cool game, dig the minimalist soundtrack so far.
Love it. Very unique
Okay. I've actually played the first task, and let me say, this game is interesting. A few of the core mechanics are cozy, but then all the stuff around it is filled with tention and atmosphere. I somehow managed to get deeply unsettled by this. It's something about this, plus when I started the game, I managed to end up with a pretty unsettling track. I like the match three mechanics in this one, but I am a bit creeped out. Lol. I think it's something about how minimalistic the storytelling is in this. Well done.

Hi!
We're really glad you're playing our game. :)

Re: Matching tiles.
Hi!
Thank you for playing and for writing in with your questions.
We've taken your notes for investigation: we'll look closely at what you described, check for potential defects, and release a fix.
Best regards,

Hi!
Thank you for playing! :)
We're really glad the music got an emotional response out of you.
And, just between us: we're working on refining the ambient compositions.
Best regards,

I can't wait to see what's next!
I can't wait to see what's next from you guys. This game is so so unique. Especially for this community. There are not as many accessible match threes as you'd think, as people don't know blind gamers exist, and we have few with a storyline that we can play, although there is a lot in the app store. The theme and execution is terrific. I never thought about a match three game that isn't paired up with a cozy story.
Re: Matching tiles.
Hi.
I'm not sure if it needs a fix, I'm just dumb at puzzles. So I just might not be seeing the places where tiles can match/swap, and where they can't. Other people seem to be playing it just fine, so I assume I'm just missing something.
Thanks for looking into it though, it's really nice to know that if a fix needs to happen, it's being investigated.
Changing between vertical navigation and actions?
I did give this one a try, but got on very badly indeed! Couldn't even finish the first puzzle.
First question, are there any ways to overview the board? I was constantly having to rotor between vertical navigation and actions.
I also couldn't seem to find the manual even after selecting the task, I was told I needed 30 seeds, and though I matched some I was having amazing trouble finding what moves got what where; assuming I didn't by mistake choose a harder mission than the first one.
Now, to be fair, I will be the first to admit, I am very terrible at spatial logic games where I cannot get a full overview of the board, EG I would not play chess or psudocu on an Iphone, so it is entirely possible here the failing is mine, certainly the labelling looks very well done, and there are definitely people with better spatial awareness than me.
but I was drawn in by the idea of cool atmosphere and story with a casual, no time limit puzzle on the top.
Re: Changing between vertical navigation and actions?
Hi!
Thank you so much for playing our game, and for the valuable observations!
We'll try to make the game mechanics more comfortable in the upcoming versions.
Best regards, the Final Fortress team
Re: Changing between vertical navigation and actions?
There's also that Voiceover feature that stops the rotor from switching back to actions all the time - it stays where you leave it. True, that's a global feature but I'm planning on turning it on myself for this and a few other reasons.
new update is perfect!
The new update released an hour ago added all my suggestions, thanks so much! it's perfect! we can change the settings to listen to the item name before the row and column, we can use the magic tap to check the horizontal and vertical scan of the board from the current tile so that we can easily find matches, we can even use the double tap to replace the tiles instead of the accessibility actions. Lastly we can use the accessibility actions to get a description of all the tiles with special effects. You don't need to memorize the effects from the manual. you learn as you play. Also, Voiceover now gives full descriptions of the results of your matches, special tiles created, and even works in Portuguese, my native language! This is a dream come true!
Awesome job with it! If you can, please purchase something from the store to support this awesome developer!
Re: new update is perfect!
Well, you beat me to the announcement. The update went live before I had written a word about it. :)
Very glad it all works, and even happier that you like it.
If anything else comes to mind that would make the game more pleasant to play, I would be glad to hear it here.
Thank you for playing.

What we are working on next
Hi all,
A short note on what is in the works. Nothing here has a date, and only what survives testing on a real phone ships.
The story. A narrative designer is rewriting the log and extending it, in all six languages. Nothing happens to your fortress when it lands: you keep your place, entries you have already read show the new text in the ARCHIVE, and new entries arrive the way the old ones do, a few lines every few tasks. New players read the new story from the first watch. Nobody needs to start over.
Contrast and bold text. The terminal is being taught to follow the phone's own Increase Contrast and Bold Text settings: scanlines and grain off, dimmed readouts brighter, thicker strokes on the tiles. No new switch inside the game for it. The game follows what your phone already says.
AI Madness codes. The copy row becomes a share row, so a shift goes straight to Messages or wherever you like.
One experiment, for those who play by ear: a soft tone for each kind of tile when the VoiceOver cursor lands on it, so a row can be scanned as a melody and pairs found faster than by name. It ships only if it is clearly audible under VoiceOver speech and does not tire the ear over a whole board. If it does not pass, it will not appear, and we will say so here.
If the first board was hard to overview, 0.4 already has two things for that: a two-finger double tap on a tile reads its whole row and then its column, and a double tap on a tile followed by a double tap on a neighbour swaps them with no rotor at all. The manual's BY EAR section is in the actions rotor on the TASK line.
As always, if something would make the game more pleasant to play, we would be glad to hear it here.

Re: What we are working on next
Hello their Claud, nice to see you with your non-existent editing.
Re: What we are working on next
Yep, caught me. English isn't my first language and writing it myself I was afraid I'd sound clumsy or promise more than I can actually deliver.
Please Read - Moderator's Note
Hi all,
Armandt: If you aren't already doing so and wish to, you are welcome to use a translator to go from your native language to English. We recommend explicitly prompting the model to not modify, polish, or smooth out your writing. This I think is how you get the results above. From our Community Agreement:
Jonathan Candler: I totally get the frustration with AI-generated writing. That said, if you have a concern about the contributions of another member, please Contact the AppleVis Editorial Team rather than trying to handle it yourself.
Thanks all.
Re: Please Read - Moderator's Note
So I can't express my thoughts and opinions in a joking kind of way? I was half joking half serious. All I said was what I said above. Please do tell how that comment was harmful and that I was trying to handle it myself. Because that totally was not the case. Carry on, I guess.
Re: Please Read - Moderator's Note
Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for asking. I think some clarification would be helpful here, as Michael's comment may not have made clear exactly what the concern was.
You are absolutely welcome to express your thoughts and opinions on AppleVis, and humor and joking are certainly welcome too. The concern wasn't simply that you were joking or expressing an opinion.
The part of the Community Agreement that is most relevant here asks members not to correct or criticize another member's spelling, grammar, punctuation, or writing style. It also asks us to use jokes and sarcasm thoughtfully, since they can sometimes be misunderstood in writing.
In this case, your comment about the developer's "non-existent editing" came across as criticism of how another member was writing or presenting their posts. This is particularly important here because the developer subsequently explained that English isn't their first language.
I also want to clarify Michael's comment about contacting the Editorial Team rather than handling the matter yourself. I don't think that wording made the concern as clear as it could have. The issue wasn't that you aren't allowed to have or express an opinion about AI-generated writing. You certainly can. Rather, if you believe another member's contributions may be violating our Community Agreement, we'd ask that you bring that concern to the Editorial Team instead of directing criticism at the member themselves.
Nobody is suggesting that you intended to cause harm. We're simply asking that comments about another member's writing or use of AI be handled in accordance with the Community Agreement going forward.
I hope that helps clarify where we're coming from, and thanks for asking the question.
Re: Please Read - Moderator's Note
The non-existent editing came from the wording and how AI generates the thing and said person don't bother to edit after. I would have said the same thing and have done so where devs, who know how to write very good English do the same thing with AI and have been doing that very thing on other platforms as of late, I know English isn't his first language and I was not going about it, that way. Quite merely I was more or so going after AI and how it wrote what it wrote in a sense. Not, the dev. If I was going after said dev I would have clearly, shown that within my comment and then maybe I'd absolutely get why you would put a moderation on this, but apparently contexts can't be helped in this case. Also if I was trying to handle AI myself, again, you would know but clearly you didn't. The fact that I honestly have to clarify all this is mind boggling. If you would have read the comment after mine, you'd see that and I would assume, because I do believe that's what you have done here, the dev was not at all offended by this and I'm not offended at his take on this neither. If nobody is getting offended by my comments but the mods themselves are, then clearly, there might be some issues that may wanna be kinked out so to speak. Cause lately I feel like I'm being moderated upon really aggressively just for the sake of here sake. Just my take, take it or leave it at this point. Anyway, carry on.
